Project Overview

South Korean design company d'strict have created a stunning anamorphic illusion on the world's largest outdoor advertising screen.

Project Innovation

‘WAVE’ with anamorphic illusion has been successfully revealed on a magnificent DOOH (digital out of home) of COEX K-POP SQUARE, the largest & high-definition outdoor advertising screen in S.Korea at 80.1m (w) x 20.1M (h).

d'strict thought it would be an astounding experience for everyone to see the LED ad billboard, transform into a new space that would surprise people. Samseong-dong, Seoul—the place where the COEX K-Pop Square is located—is notorious for its traffic, people are always busy, and d'strict thought of delivering a special surprise for passers-by.

The signage, developed by Samsung, is comprised of approximately 31,000 LED display modules, enabling it to display resolutions up to 7,840×1,952 pixels.

Design Challenge

Experts in the industry will be familiar with its effects and limitations, but the anamorphic illusion technology has the restriction that only the most complete 3D stereoscopic effects can be viewed from specific view points. Therefore, it was necessary to study and consider the visuals and expressions that can minimize distortion, even when viewing the content from a different view point.

The most challenging point of the Wave was to find a way to create the surface that corresponds to the ceiling. After designing the surface of the ceiling with different variations, the team had a lot of time for field tests on the actual LED screen and got the best 3D stereoscopic view from multiple angles.

Commercial projects recognises that design is the means to create meaningful experiences for users, create value for people and drive profit for businesses.

The visual category celebrates creative and innovative design in printed, digital or environmental representations of ideas and messages. Consideration given to clarity of communication and the matching information style to audience.
