Project Context

In South Korea, there are 10,000 residential fires ever year, and yet, 58% of homes still don't have a fire extinguisher - despite a new law which required every home to have one by 2017.

Even if homes have one, people usually don't take good care of them. They store them in hard to reach places, or completely forget about them.

How can they be bought back within reach?

Project Innovation

Firevase is an aesthetically pleasing flower vase that doubles as a throw-able fire extinguisher, making for a palatable, and Korea Fire Institute approved, alternative to conventional fire extinguishers.

The inner chamber of the Firevase functions as an ordinary vase, able to be filled with water and flowers, while the outer chamber contains a non-irritable solution of potassium carbonate - a chemical which suppresses oxygen - which snuffs out fire when dispersed.

As the Firevase is constructed of rigid polyvinyl chloride, there is no danger of cuts from the broken pieces of the vase.

From September to December 2018, Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance gave out approximately 100,000 Firevases to residents nationwide, and will use proceeds from Firevases sold in stores to support facilities with weak fire safety protection.

Social design applies a design methodology and intervention to tighten the social fabric that holds us together. Addressing issues of social inequality, such as poverty or social isolation, social design is the pathway to a more just and sustainable society. Community-oriented design is a human-centered and participatory design practice that emphasises the betterment of local communities through the improvement of public facilities, equipment, identity and experience.

The object category celebrates creative and innovative design for an object or product. Consideration is given according to the design context and need, design innovation and the application of human centred design principles.
