Project Overview

Notable Women is an augmented reality app that lets anyone see 100 historic American women where they’ve historically been left out: U.S. currency. Discover the accomplishments of activists, artists, scientists, business leaders, writers, civic leaders and more—right on the money in your wallet.

Notable Women is a project by former Treasurer of the United States Rosie Rios, made with some friends from Google.

Project Context

Notable Women features 100 historic women selected from the Teachers Righting History database, a collection of women whom the American people recommended to appear on actual U.S. currency during my time at the U.S. Department of Treasury.

Project Innovation

This project began with Rosie Rios' mission to celebrate historic American women - and the role technology could play to bring it to life. She, and her team at Google were inspired by two simple thoughts: “What if we didn’t have to wait to see women on U.S. currency?” And, “What if anyone could learn about women who made U.S. history in a place where they’ve historically been left out?”

Notable Women, which uses augmented reality to superimpose portraits of 100 amazing American women on bills, is the answer to these questions. And while it’s designed with teachers and their students in mind, the content is for everyone.

Social design applies a design methodology and intervention to tighten the social fabric that holds us together. Addressing issues of social inequality, such as poverty or social isolation, social design is the pathway to a more just and sustainable society. Community-oriented design is a human-centered and participatory design practice that emphasises the betterment of local communities through the improvement of public facilities, equipment, identity and experience.

The experience design category celebrates designed journeys, services, events and processes where the focus is placed on the experiences of the user. Consideration is given according to the design context and need, design innovation and the application of human centred design principles.
