Design Commissioner


The Design Commissioner Award will be awarded to the business or manufacturer that consistently commissions excellent design work thereby providing instrumental support to the wider design community. 

This category is non-entrable. It will be selected from all entries into the awards and no entry fee is required. The chairman of each panel will make their recommendation for this award.

  

 

Design Creator


The Design Creator Award will be awarded to the studio, advertising agency, architectural firm or other design professional that consistently achieves excellence in design creation. This award will be allocated in three categories based on business size – less than 5 employees, 5-20 employees and greater than 20 employees. 

This category is non-entrable. It will be selected from all entries into the awards and no entry fee is required. The chairman of each panel will make their recommendation for this award.
  

 

Graphic Design - Illustration and Type


This award recognises traditional or digital visual representation of ideas and messages. Consideration given to clarity of communication and the matching information style to audience.   

 

Digital Experience - Games


This award recognises innovation and unique user experience in the combination of text, audio, still images, animation, video, and interactivity content for games. Consideration given to clarity of communication and the matching information style to audience.   

 

Design Retailer - less than 5 shops


This award recognises the leading retailer of designer products. The award is allocated in three categories based on the number of retail outlets in Australia (Less than 5 stores, 5+ stores). Digital retailers may be included.   

 

Interior Design - Retail, more than 5 shops


This award recognises retail interiors and design, with consideration given to space creation and planning, furnishings, finishes and aesthetic presentation. Consideration given to space allocation, traffic flow, building services, lighting, fixtures, flooring, colours, furnishings and surface finishes.  

 

Design Manufacturer


This award recognises those who manufacture leading design products and support the design industry by supplying goods and services.   

 

Design Publication - Print


The Design Publication - Print must be produced specifically for the design community either professional or the design public. This award recognises the publication that is regarded as the best design publication. The publication must be printed.   

 

Design Publication - Online


The Design Publication - Online must be produced specifically for the design community either professional or the design public. This award recognises the publication that is regarded as the best design publication that is online or in digital format.   

 

Design Event


This award recognises the leading design event conducted in Sydney. It may be a single function or series of functions and events under one design event umbrella. The event must be designed specifically for the design community either professional or the design public.   

 

Architecture - Commercial - Constructed


This award recognises the design process and product of planning, designing and constructing form, space and ambience that reflect functional, technical, social, and aesthetic considerations. Consideration given for material selection, technology, light and shadow. The project must be constructed.   

 

Architecture - Residential - Constructed


This award recognises the design process and product of planning, designing and constructing form, space and ambience that reflect functional, technical, social, and aesthetic considerations. Consideration given for material selection, technology, light and shadow. The project must be constructed.   

 

Architecture - Mixed - Use - Constructed


This award recognises the design process and product of planning, designing and constructing form, space and ambience that reflect functional, technical, social, and aesthetic considerations. Consideration given for material selection, technology, light and shadow. The project must be constructed.

Landscape Architecture


This award recognises the use of practical, aesthetic, horticultural, and environmental sustainability components, taking into account climate, site and orientation, site drainage and irrigation, human and vehicular access, furnishings and lighting.   

 

Urban Design


This award recognises the process of designing and shaping cities, towns and villages, and is about making connections between people and places, movement and urban form, nature and the built fabric. 
Consideration will be given to giving form, shape and character to groups of buildings, streets and public spaces, transport systems, services and amenities, whole neighbourhoods and districts, and entire cities, to make urban areas functional, attractive and sustainable.
  

 

Lighting Design


This award recognises best use of lighting design or effects in indoor or outdoor spaces.   

 

Advertising


This award recognises visual communication intended to persuade an audience to purchase or take some action upon products, ideas or services. Consideration given to clarity of communication and the matching of information style to audience.

  

 

Graphic Design - Identity and Branding


This award recognises traditional or digital visual representation of ideas and messages. Consideration given to clarity of communication and the matching information style to audience.   

 

Graphic Design - Three Dimensional


This award recognises traditional or digital visual representation of ideas and messages used in packaging design. Consideration given to: 

  • clarity of communication and the matching information style to audience; 
  • the approach, including marketing and branding concerns, the dynamics of the retail environment, environmental considerations, and legal requirements; 
  • the component parts of packaging graphics such as colour rationalisation, information layout, feel and tone of illustration and photography, and finishes, and how they are used in isolation and in relation to each other; and 
  • the relationship to the anatomy of the structural design.

This award recognises a rapid display of a sequence of images of 2-D or 3-D artwork or model.

This award recognises design-related photography intended to communicate a message, announce a product or cause a shift in the behavior of the viewer.

This award recognises visual and audio communication in the form of advertisements, short films and music videos that place an emphasis on design values.   

 

Product Design - Automotive and Transport


This award recognises a component or overall product. Consideration given to aspects that relate to human usage, aesthetics, selection of components and materials, and the resolution of assembly, manufacturing and the overall function.

This award recognises personal apparel that has a national or international presence, and is for sale in global markets. Consideration given to functional and aesthetic aspects and the relationship to the human form.

Fashion Design - Accessories and Jewellery


This award recognises a component or overall product. Consideration given to all aspects that relate to human usage, aesthetics, selection of materials, and resolution of the overall function.   

 

Fashion Stylist


This award recognises a strong aesthetic sense for pulling great looks together - someone who coordinates the clothing, jewellery and accessories used in fashion photography and catwalk presentation. May also work with an individual client to design a coordinated wardrobe of garments. Level of expertise in the current fashion market and future fashion trends taken into consideration.

This award recognises the developing of floor plans and three dimensional displays to maximise sales. Consideration given to attracting, engaging and motivating customers to make purchases. Consideration given to use of colour, lighting, space, product information, sensory inputs (smell, touch, sound) as well as technologies such as digital displays and interactive installations.  

 

Wayfinding


This award recognises the role of design in the ways people orient themselves in physical space, and navigate from place to place. Consideration given to signage and other graphic communication, clues in the building's spatial grammar, logical space planning, audible communication, tactile elements and provision for special-needs users.
