Project Overview
This 1970's bathroom had a typical layout for the era. One main room housed a bath and vanity, then within that same room a separate toilet and a separate shower room.
A complete design and renovation was required.

Project Brief
The brief was to create an open plan bathroom, which could also house a European laundry. We didn't want the bathroom to date, but at the same time we wanted it to be sophisticated and warm.
Three internal walls had to be removed. A lintel that spanned the room was installed.
We dropped the back half of the ceiling, so we could house the venting that was required for the dryer and the shower fans.
The wall of cupboards contain plently of storage, a full sized trough, fitted washing machine and wall hung dryer.
The cabinet maker designed separate pull out clean and dirty baskets to keep things tidy.
Floor heating, heated towel rail, inwall toilet and custom designed vanity make this bathroom a joy to use.
Project Innovation / Need
As the room is only 3.700mm wide x 2.200 deep, we feel we used the space really well and met the brief, which included a full service laundry.
We installed under floor heating which is not used enough in bathrooms. It is relatively cheap and easy to install and brings a luxury to the space.
Design Challenge
As the apartment had a narrow stair entry and is on the second level, we had to bring the steel beam in through the window via scaffolding.
The ventilation was the second biggest challenge. To vent the dryer, which is inside a cupboard, we needed to create a bulkhead that ran the span of the room.
By dropping half of the ceiling in the room we could hide all our ventilation and lighting in the false ceiling. Making it look attractive was also a challenge.
Sustainability
All our taps are Scala taps which are made in Australia. The wall hung toilet is a Caroma Australia product.
Interior Design - Residential
This award recognises building interiors, with consideration given to space creation and planning, furnishings, finishes and aesthetic presentation. Consideration given to space allocation, traffic flow, building services, lighting, fixtures, flooring, colours, furnishings and surface finishes.
