Project Brief

Adam Weaver, founder of Convert Studios, wanted to design a seating range in its simplest form, and it had to be stackable to save valuable space in areas where space is a luxury.

Drawing on the material used to define its structure and aesthetics, tubular steel was chosen. Using this material makes it work in all types of environments, by simply having the ability to powder coat it in any colour.

Simply put, I wanted to achieve a robust clean design. Keeping it basic makes the whole design and theory behind the product work in all commercial and residential areas.

Project Need

Its 'A' frame like structure, achieves the product to be stackable.

Design Challenge

The whole development process of this product was challenging. It looks quite simple now, however the product had a design facelift to make it actually commercially viable and make it work. I thought using tubular steel would be an easy thing to produce. Having realised by trial and error, during the development stage that some forming angles actually work against the structure and then to produce this in production causes too many unwanted variables, I made the decision to modify the design. I really like how the product works and looks now.

Sustainability

Keeping a product simple creates a reusable product at the end of its product life.

When I began my design career, I have always had this inbuilt into my thought process when designing products. I challenge the design and try to make it as simple as it can be, minimal components, clean and the ability to pull it all apart to reuse for recycling.

Tote Stool does exactly this, it is made from tubular steel and plastic. You can separate all the components and recycle this.

This award recognises a component or overall product. Consideration given to aspects that relate to human usage, aesthetics, selection of components and materials, and the resolution of assembly, manufacturing and the overall function.
