Summary

I am a textile artist and designer who has developed site-specific artworks for major festivals and has designed/made costumes for many years. In addition to Pleiades (a community art work) other recent major works include Rain Sonnet - the text of A Midsummer Night's Dream reproduced in glass raindrops as a wearable bodice. During 2011 on an Arts Tasmania residency the prototype was developed for the Talking Skirt.

Inspiration/Method

The first large felted sculptural piece I made was nine years ago and was shown in the SideSpace Gallery Salamanca, Hobart. The work "Ethereal Journey" consisted of felt wings 2.5m wide by 1.5m tall, weighing only 60grams without the wire armature.

Why - because I was told that I could not do it - so I did it!

I was also told that skirts can not talk - but they can - I made one!

I love design, I love creating, I love being inspired, I love testing the boundaries with my work.

Design Challenge

The Felt wraps and collars are made for the retail market. My challenge each season is to make sure that my commercial work reflects current market trends in colour and design - interestingly I have been making the neck wraps and collars for six years and it appears the "infinity" scarf is the "hottest" item for winter 2013.

The wraps I make, depending on size, can be worn as vests as well.
The wraps are made from Merino and sometimes silk is added which keeps the work warm, light and luxurious. This also suits the market that these items are designed for.

When I felt complete garments (such as the cream dress, pictured below) I once again look for lightness and integrity with my felting.
