Project Overview

First developed in China by biotech company Guangzhou Wondfo Biotech, and set to be distributed in Australia by Cellmid limited after approval from the TGA in late March, the COVID-19 Rapid Test provides a simple alternative to lengthy testing using specialist equipment.

Project Context

On December 31, 2019, several cases of pneumonia in Wuhan City, Hubei Province of China were reported to the World Health Organization (WHO). The novel virus, now known as SARS-CoV-2 an RNA virus of the beta coronavirus family, has since spread across the globe. WHO has named the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 as “COVID-19”.

COVID-19 presents as a gradual onset of fever, fatigue, dry cough and dyspnoea. Most cases are mild or moderate. However, in the elderly and infirm individuals the viral infection can lead to acute respiratory distress syndrome, septic shock, metabolic acidosis and coagulopathy. Infection is emerging as fatal in 2-4% of confirmed cases

Governments worldwide have taken extreme measures to limit the spread of SARS-CoV-2, including enforced quarantine periods and social distancing, travel bans, and business and event closures.

Project Innovation

Infrastructure for testing for SARS-CoV-2 is at capacity and rapid, simple screening methods, without the need for sophisticated equipment are critically needed to detect cases and prevent further spread. Particularly in regional areas and for essential businesses.

SARS-CoV-2 Antibody test for rapid detection of COVID-19:
* Detects IgM and IgG antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 for identification of early through to late stage infection
* ~3 minutes for strong positives, early cases may take 15 minutes
* No sophisticated equipment required
* Viable after storage at ~1 year at room temperature
* Output is simple to interpret

Social design applies a design methodology and intervention to tighten the social fabric that holds us together. Addressing issues of social inequality, such as poverty or social isolation, social design is the pathway to a more just and sustainable society. Community-oriented design is a human-centered and participatory design practice that emphasises the betterment of local communities through the improvement of public facilities, equipment, identity and experience.

The object category celebrates creative and innovative design for an object or product. Consideration is given according to the design context and need, design innovation and the application of human centred design principles.
