Project Brief
It all started from a passion for the oceans and the hard realisation that human over consumption and waste mismanagement was killing nature’s best jewel, which also happens to regulate our world’s operation to an extent we are only starting to understand.
This is why, Andrew Turton and Pete Ceglinski, two avid surfers, decided to quit their jobs to create a “Seabin”.
Project Innovation
The Seabin can intercept: floating debris, macro and micro plastics and even micro fibres with an additional filter. By acting as a trash skimmer, the Seabin is also able to clean the water from contaminated organic material - leaves, seaweed, etc. And with the inclusion of custom oil pad technology, the Seabin can also skim surface oil.
The Seabin is capable of catching an estimated 3.9 Kgs per day, or 1 ton of floating debris per year via a reusable catch bag, and a submersible water pump, powered via 110v or 220v outlet, capable of displacing 25.000 litres per hour.
The Seabin achieves this level of detritus collection whilst only requiring an approximate running cost of $1 per day, and is able to be adapted to run via solar power systems - further reducing impact on the environment.
Government - Object
Government projects celebrate the courage of both commissioners and creators design projects across the government, education and other publicly funded sectors.
The object category celebrates creative and innovative design for an object or product. Consideration is given according to the design context and need, design innovation and the application of human centred design principles.
