Project Overview

DIY Blinds is a major disruptor in the blinds and curtains industry within Australia. The DIY Blinds website provides customers an intuitive do it yourself platform to measure, customise, order and fit blinds for a fraction of the cost of bricks and mortar retailers.

Northmost re-launched the DIY Blinds brand and website, matching the online experience with their excellent customer service and quality products. The new website features inspiration from industry influencers, comprehensive how to guides and a bespoke, easy to use product ‘customiser’ to complement the DIY Blinds unique online offering. Customers are able to create blinds, shutters and curtains online, on any device.

Content is kept up to date with a tailored CMS experience, providing customers more engaging inspirational and practical content as well as the latest product information and innovations.

Northmost worked with DIY Blinds across brand, digital strategy, user experience, design and development to create a market leading website experience for their customers.

Project Brief

The previous DIY Blinds website facilitated their customers core need, do it yourself blinds, but it did not communicate the brand aesthetic or quality of products and services they offered. As a growing business, DIY Blinds needed to evolve their brand and digital platform to better communicate the level of quality in their products and services and provide a destination for interior designers, renovators and influences that used their products to direct customers to.

DIY Blinds engaged Northmost to overhaul their brand and website to facilitate three key objectives; a place for customers to come and be inspired by the possibilities following through to conversion, a way to help customers move through the process of measuring and fitting their own blinds and most importantly a robust, easy to use product customiser that could adapt to over ten variations of products using a single responsive user interface and development solution.

Insights revealed the customer process - ordering samples, measuring their windows and a quick quote before completing the customiser process. Customers would return to the site with any trouble shooting on installation one they had their product. The new website needed to ensure that no matter where the customer was in the process that they could easily access the step they needed.

Project Need

Expanding quickly, DIY Blinds required a website that could meet the customer demand. Competing with international online blind companies and the traditional bricks and mortar, DIY Blinds required a market leading website that would help get their Australian made, quality products to the masses.

As a personal product for the home, the website had to be highly inspirational, giving customers a sense of what their blinds could look like, providing unlimited samples shipped express and ultimately a direct link to conversion.

With a large group of interior designers, renovators and influencers that use their products, DIY Blinds wanted to better promote their partnerships to showcase products and provide further inspiration for customers.

DIY Blinds had a number of technical requirements that needed to be considered for the user experience and development which included a product range that had a number of unique and complex steps, integration with an API that served all product data and lastly, customer purchasing trends that showed variance between a single product purchase to 30 product purchases - all needing to be customised.

DIY Blinds understood that users engaged with their product customiser mostly on tablets and phones, which meant a very complex set of steps that differed across ten plus products would need to be easy to use on any device. Responsive was also a core consideration when creating instructions on measuring and installing blinds.

User Experience

Workshops were facilitated by Northmost to better understand business and customer requirements. Customers varied from individuals purchasing for their home to businesses bulk purchasing for their clients. Northmost analysed user data from the existing website along with DIY Blinds channels.

Analysis showed some purchasing patterns that could be consolidated, but overall each product would require a unique customiser flow. To ensure the user experience was cohesive throughout, we wanted the experience to feel consistent across shutters, blinds and curtains. Iconography and product illustrations were created to provide a consistent brand experience throughout the site. The customiser was designed and custom developed using a tile solution that allowed DIY Blinds to add new steps, product features or options without requiring a redesign.

The inspiration section featured real examples of DIY Blinds products in both influencer renovations and interior design fit outs. Inspiration needed to provide customers another way to browse products, so a ‘shop the look’ modal can be added to any image, informing the customer what the product is, the material used and directs them to purchase.

The new website provides customers an inspirational product experience that helps them every step of the way from research, customisation through to installation.

Project Marketing

DIY Blinds launched their site in March 2019 and promoted it across their social channels in Australia. The website has allowed DIY Blinds to better promote themselves and allow the strong influencer audience to do the same. The site now enables them to create an inspiration article about a renovation or interior design that they can use to promote their products and services.

Since launch, DIY Blinds has continues to grow moving to a new office and expanding their office capability to manage their online customer enquiries and orders.

Project Privacy

Customers who sign up for an account can track their current and previous purchases, samples they have ordered and their account information. Accounts and email subscription settings on the website can be managed by the customer.
