Project Overview

Holding Redlich is a major Australian law firm that had a website that was due for a refresh. It no longer represented how clients or internal stakeholders saw the firm. The new design needed to make people feel like they were in the right place - something that would attract the right clients and the right staff. It needed to start with a focus on content and mobile first. The site would be a tool for clients and staff to access the collective knowledge of the firm. With over 5000 pages of content, the site needed to act as both a repository and a resource of knowledge. Overall, Holding Redlich needed a site it could be proud of.

Project Brief

The brief was to design a site that represented Holding Redlich and its people. As a law firm, Holding Redlich is a bit different. There is an edge about it that allows it to be approachable. The site needed to influence the way people felt about the firm, providing them with a first impression that conveyed a sense of fun, approachability and professionalism.

Holding Redlich needed a site that would:

- allow users to navigate and access the vast amounts of content the firm has published
- be seen as a repository of content that can be distributed via other mediums
- allow the user to read content on their commute and continue to educate themselves while they are in the office
- allow the consumer to search for relevant content that leads to them seeing Holding Redlich as knowledgeable, and ultimately seeking to engage the firm
- provide access to secure content for certain specified users
- promote the organisation as a great place to work and attract an influx of talented people
- have a major focus on practice areas that would inform users of the firm’s expertise and attract the right type of work.

Project Need

The site represents a novel approach to legal websites in that it seeks to showcase the personality of the firm, unlike most law firm websites which tend to be very dry and uninviting.

From the point of view of prospective clients of the firm, there was a need to present information in a more user-friendly way. The site contains an enormous amount of rich and relevant content but it was buried by poor information architecture. The new content structure is much better placed to serve the objectives of the users of the site.

User Experience

Migrating content from the old site to the new one was by far the biggest challenge. With over 5000 pages of content and a large number of contributors, identifying the right content to migrate was a continual challenge throughout the project. The obstacles in the process included stripping out the irrelevant styles from each page of content, the transfer of images, and the curation of the content by the person responsible for it.

Migrating the content manually included a large consultative process around the relevance of each piece of content. By duplicating the content on the new site, the process of determining whether to reduce, reuse or remove content became an individual function rather than the responsibility of a copywriting committee.

Project Marketing

The site now features a greater emphasis on directing users towards other related content, which means users now have the ability to easily explore a topic in more detail. Further, the new search feature provides an effective way to deal with the wide range of legal topics a user may be interested in.

The information architecture has also been redeveloped with the intention of providing an enhanced user experience. Access to the right lawyer is linked to the content being consumed. So the site now takes the user on a complete journey, right from researching a problem through to making contact with the relevant lawyer.

The user experience has also been vastly improved for Holding Redlich’s content administrators, through the use of headless CMS Kentico Cloud. The use of a headless CMS enables content creators to re-purpose content elements from the website for distribution to other mediums, such as in a response to a request for tender. One piece of content can be easily reused for multiple purposes without any duplication of effort, resulting in a significant time saving for content administrators.
