Project Brief

Glowpear™ co-founder Lloyd Fenn was inspired to create the Urban Garden after his efforts to grow fresh produce in inner city Melbourne highlighted the lack of user friendly solutions for medium to high density environments.

“We wanted our solution to be compact to work within the constraints of any urban space, and simple enough for increasingly time-poor inner city lifestyles,” Mr Fenn said.

“The contemporary design aesthetic is accompanied by durable construction to make the Urban Garden ideal for balconies, courtyards, decks and patios, while design features also ensure it can be used on any surface, indoor or out.”

Modular design allows each planter to either stand alone or be interconnected, Mr Fenn said the planter is the perfect solution for any space or budget.

"And every Glowpear™ Urban Garden comes with its own integrated self-watering system to ensure plants thrive, regardless of today’s busy lifestyle. This ensures even the novice gardener can generate their own vibrant fresh produce at home in a cost effective way," Mr Fenn said.

Design Challenge

The design challenge was to create something that was functional, however looked good too. This is something lacking in the product category currently.

Functional aspects such as the level indicator, drip trays, fill points, over flows, and of course the self watering performance needed to be proven via testing which of course took a substantial time, however allowed for the final product to work and look great.

Sustainability

The sustainability considerations of the Glowpear™ Urban Garden are:

- The materials in the Urban Garden are all recyclable.
- The water used by the Urban Garden is less than traditional planters as it uses wicking through capillary action, and reduces evaporation in the process.
- Gardeners can enjoy farm fresh organic produce by using the Glowpear™ Urban Garden.
- If a gardener were to use the Glowpear™ Urban Garden to grow herbs, instead of buying a bunch from the supermarket each week, the Urban Garden would be paid back in less than a year, making it a smart economical choice.
