The Principal Edinburgh Charlotte Square

Interior Design - Hospitality

The Principal Edinburgh Charlotte Square is a luxury 4-star hotel on the beautiful Charlotte Square UNESCO world heritage site. Completed in September 2017, the £25m transformation of the former Roxburghe hotel included a complete revamp of the hotel’s public spaces including the reception, ballroom and meeting rooms, plus new F&B offerings in the form of former courtyard space ‘The Garden’, plus new Levantine-inspired bar & restaurant – BABA. All of the hotel’s 181 rooms and 18 suites, plus linking lobbies and corridors, were also completely redesigned. Like a cosmopolitan clubhouse, the scheme for The Principal Edinburgh Charlotte Square is eclectic, intriguing and full of references to travel, from set-dressing with vintage suitcases, hats and canes to The Map Room, where the walls are lined with historic maps from around the world. The interior feel is plush and elegant, with interesting and varied furniture and tactile, high-quality fabrics, such as richly-coloured velvets and leathers, all set within a series of stand-out individual spaces.

The Garden

Interior Design - Hospitality

‘The Garden’ is a destination all-day food and beverage space for hotel guests and local Edinburgh residents, located within former courtyard of the Principal Edinburgh Charlotte Square. Taking inspiration from the great hothouses and orangeries of historic country estates, the scheme is eclectic, with varied furnishings and accessories to give the impression of an ensemble of pieces acquired over a period of many years. Filled with plants, trees, hanging baskets and vines, the new space is a biophilic delight, with the new glass roof providing natural lighting and open views of the sky, resulting in the creation of a ‘magical oasis’ right in the heart of the hotel.

BABA

Interior Design - Hospitality

Launched in November 2017, BABA is the new destination restaurant and bar within The Principal Edinburgh Charlotte Square, masterminded by the culinary team behind hit Glasgow restaurant, Ox and Finch and offering a boldly unconventional menu of small plate mezze dining with the unique flavour of ‘Levantine escapism’. Goddard Littlefair worked with PRINCIPAL and the operating team to develop a contemporary, Levantine-inspired design scheme to fit with the Middle Eastern culinary concept. The bar and restaurant feature a vibrant colour scheme and an industrial, distressed design feel, with strong elements of the Levantine in terms of colours and detailing. With its own street entrance, signalling the unique space within, BABA is a bold and contemporary addition to the hotel’s food and beverage offering.

Hans' Bar & Grill

Interior Design - Hospitality

Hans’ Bar & Grill is a new neighbourhood restaurant in Chelsea’s Pavilion Road, conceived of by the team behind Chewton Glen, Lygon Arms, Cliveden and 11 Cadogan Gardens. The 106-cover venue is made up of a café-bar and extended restaurant, including a wine display area and newly-covered former courtyard space, within the 11 Cadogan Gardens hotel. The restaurant was named in honour of Cadogan family ascendant Sir Hans Sloane, one-time physician to the royal family and President of The Royal Society.
