Zazen Bear is a retailer of products that are an outward reflection of the Zen spirit that lives within you. In line with this product ethos, the Zazen Bear boutique in he heart of Soho, New York, provides a harmonious, tranquil and luxuriouos refuge from its chaotic surroundings.

Project Brief
Inspripiration was to be taken from the Zazen Bear itself - its symetry, harmony and comfort. So the starting point was to design a space to convey these feelings tranisitoning from a busy street in Soho to inside a space where everything is calm. The important elemeents were lights, textures annd materials to create a space where this physical and psychological transition could occur.
Design Challenge
The project presented two main challenges, the first being to engineer such a curved surface to be installed in a landmark brick building in Soho. The second challenge was sound, curved surfaces bounce sound easily so special materiasl were required to be installed in not only the ceiling but also the wallpaper to absorb the sound.

This award celebrates innovative and creative building interiors, with consideration given to space creation and planning, furnishings, finishes and aesthetic presentation. Consideration given to space allocation, traffic flow, building services, lighting, fixtures, flooring, colours, furnishings and surface finishes.
