Project Overview

Racing along the coastal highway, what comes into view is the blue sky and the green ocean. The refreshing experience has inspired the design of A Love of the Sea, which is a newly-completed house located in Keelung, whose homeowners are a retired couple. The male homeowner has a great passion for fishing and intense love for the sea. Accordingly, the designer incorporates motifs of ocean fishing and the ocean into the spatial design.

Project Brief

Adjacent to the living room, the open-plan dining room looks spacious and unobstructed. The TV wall is characterized by fun elements. On the left are hardwood grilles closely placed together to symbolize ocean waves. This proceeds further to the left into the dining-room cabinets and the base section of the wall leading to the kitchen, shaping a visual continuity, with thin white tiles suggestive of reefs, while the earth-tone walls all around are transformed into the beach. Thus an abstract beach scene that feels so real comes into view, creating a calming, laid-back feel.

Project Need

On the right at the entrance is a shoe cabinet whose door panels are specifically covered with mirrors, ideal for grooming before going out and making the space look bigger by means of reflection. The screen ahead of the entrance is made of semi-frosted striped glass dimply reflecting the vista across the hallway. The motif of a fishing rod is also integrated into the curvy trim of the screen. The taboo of chuantangsha in Eastern fengshui—the entire residence in full exposure—is cleverly flouted in a romantic, aesthetic way.

Design Challenge

Height differences on the ceiling of the living room and the dining room are specifically attained with curves to make for spatial layers and hide air-conditioning and hardware circuits from sight. This not only echoes with curvy lines on the screen at the entrance, but enhances visual height inside and reduces sense of oppression in the space. Behind the sofa is an open area, adaptable and flexible to meet different needs. After communication with the homeowners, the open plan is retained but is fitted with shelving to enhance storage and display the homeowners’ collection and books.
Down the central hallway is the master bedroom as well as the guestroom and walk-in closet for the homeowners’ children to stay when they return home. The main wall in the master bedroom is painted light brown to be consistent with the living room, thereby achieving visual integrity and entirety and accentuating a warm, serene vibe. The separate walk-in closet is equipped with ample hanger rods, drawers and cabinetry, so that large amounts of clothing can be stored perfectly. The greenness outside the large window makes daily grooming and clothing storage an enjoyment. The guestroom presents an interplay of light blue and dark blue, bringing alive once again the imagery of the ocean to the space. In this way, the entire space is lively and interconnected, seamlessly bringing life and nature together and adding amazement and fun.

Sustainability

With personalized palette, an open-floor plan and thus a smooth flow, as well as strategic storage and healthy green materials. All the details are thoughtfully conducted to make a practical modern residence that looks to the future to highlight a taste that never goes out of style.
