Project Overview

MMC DESIGN conceived an office and exhibition space for textile manufacturing company Springair in Hangzhou, China.
Space embodies the way of life to some extent. As approaching the project, the designers thought about what kind of workspace could enable its users to focus on working while reflecting on life. Based on the concept "Life is a gleaming journey", they combined the real and virtual to create a poetic, eternal space that transcends logic and norms.

Project Brief

Located in Binjiang District, Hangzhou, the project is a textile company's office & exhibition space, which was conceived with creative design concepts. The end scene at the entrance area was designed based on children' physical height and perspective. The overall spatial structure is solemn yet childish. Walls complemented by distinctive lighting and curves on the top endow the entire space with a restrained, calming, deep and isolated feeling, like a cave.

The spatial structures feature geometric shapes and are organized in a way like kids' building blocks, appearing solemn yet childish. The interior is dominated by gray hue, and highlighted by dynamic red.
The workbench draws inspiration from Ariadne's thread that helped Theseus find the way out of the labyrinth in Greek mythology. Its streamlined red surface penetrates the area under the arched ceiling, adding smoothness and freedom to the space.

Project Innovation/Need

The project draws design inspirations from many Greek myths such as Platon’s Cave, Ariadne's Thread and Greek Column Lines. In addition, guided by the most straightforward and concrete design concepts, the designers also adopted the mysterious symbols to create an immersive aesthetic space

Design Challenge

The designers intended to commit to creating a more artistic space. However, how to perfectly bring together practicality and artistry within the limited space and how to integrate the design concepts of the designers while also gaining the recognition of the client remain the difficulties of the project.

Sustainability

The environmentally friendly construction materials are preferentially selected, including terrazzo that is wear-resistant, stain-resistant, corrosion-resistant, pollution-free, and without peculiar odor, and cost-effective and eco-friendly artistic coatings, water-based paint, steel panels, etc.
