Project Brief
From the very beginning, the client insisted that the design direction should be raw and as unintentional as possible. The main feature of the barber shop is the cement rendered walls created with collaboration with a local artist. The cement is applied with momentum in order to achieve a multiple layering effect, in various shades and colours. Touches of gold was also applied at the end.
The final result was extremely dynamic and ultimately captures the attention of passing customers. Furthermore, we aimed to maintain an industrial look to accompany the feature walls, using materials such as wire mesh and recycled concrete blocks to reflect the atmosphere of the shop.
Project Innovation/Need
The project is simple, but effective with only a small palette of materials. Most of the materials are bought off the shelf and little customisation was needed to achieve the look desired. We kept it raw and simple.
Design Challenge
With the construction budget extremely tight, we had to make use of off the shelf materials & furniture. Despite this, it ended up working in our favour to achieve the look that the client was after.
Sustainability
Most of the materials, especially the front counter was sourced from a recycling factory where the material was going to go to waste. This not only helped us save on costs but also helped us save the wastage that was eventually going to go to a landfill.
