Project Brief

A previous renovation had diminished the period features of what was once an Art Deco cottage. Our aim was to celebrate the original period of the home while renovating it to suite a contemporary family. The home needed to feel relaxed and comfortable, at home in its architecture, but with a nod towards the client's English heritage.
Situated on Sydneys North Shore, the home was already set up to take advantage of spectacular harbour views; our design goal was to make the internal spaces just as spectacular.
By including a few pieces of vintage furniture, lighting and fabrics, we gave the predominately contemporary design a link to the past. Using a basic white, gallery-esque backdrop, the feature wall papers, fabrics and fixtures became pieces of art within the space.

Project Innovation/Need

The house had been stripped of many of the original period features and then had a series of renovations, in somewhat different styles. We needed to give the home back a natural flow and a sense of architectural belonging. First, we refined the spaces and details and then inserted elements from several periods, blurring the time lines of design. By mixing design elements from different times, the home is no longer defined by any one period and, thereby, the combination creates a modern space.

Design Challenge

The challenge was to give an awkward space a natural sense of flow and essence of the inhabitants. The balance of colour and texture giving each space its own sense of character and whimsey to suite the young family without making it feel overwhelming or contrived.

Sustainability

Where possible, we sourced materials and furniture locally. Unless in damaged condition, we tried to reuse as much of the original architectural elements as possible.
