Project Brief

The hotel, a renovation project, keeps the original building frame structure in the space. Through the reorganization, extension and detail design of the interior space, the designer makes the functions of the interior space more reasonable and diversified, to enhance the spatial value. Adhering to the environment friendly, sustainable design concept, the designer manages to bring in the original building decorations for reuse in the selection of materials. The space also shows a mixed style by extracting the colors and morphological elements from the original artworks, which preserves the historical remains and reduces the waste of resources.

Project Innovation/Need

The space integrates western tradition and modern charm. The retro metal frame in the lobby looks majestic and sacred, adding a sense of ritual. The frame that extends to the water bar screens off an area, where pink magnolia, the city flower of Shanghai outlined with Chinese painting brush, unfolds the traditional Chinese painting skills. The color matching in the space and its collocation with the wall decorations build up a brilliant, elegant atmosphere.
The colors of the guest rooms continue the overall tone of the hotel. The blue and green colors are extracted from the original artworks as embellishment, supplemented by marbles and fabrics of various gradients of the gray, looking elegant and romantic. The toilet wall is exposed with polished cement, showing an elegant and comfortable artistic atmosphere that recovers the original simplicity. The Sky Fortune suites highlight the luxury quality. The Baroque style sofa, luxury chandelier and soothing colors are combined to create a delicate and elegant private atmosphere. In the living rooms, the historical murals and natural green seats are furnished to forge the theme of Chinese residences with an international vision.
The dining rooms, combining the East and West styles, show luxury with chairs of Nordic patterns on the back. The floating fish art devices make the space lively and full of vitality, where guests can experience the charm of art across time, space and culture.

Design Challenge

The biggest challenge of this project is that the hotel was still in operation while being renovated. The designers need to conduct the project with minimal waste and pollution in order to ensure the hotel's business normality. Therefore designers only reorganize the interior space and optimize the function without tearing down the partition walls. Besides, a lot of original structures, features and objects are reused adhering to the concept of getting the best result with the least modification.

Sustainability

Adhering to the environment friendly, sustainable design concept, the designer manages to bring in the original building decorations for reuse in the selection of materials. The original guest room doors, furniture, lamps and accessories have been recycled and redecorated. For example, in the guest rooms, the blue and green colors are extracted from the original artworks as embellishment, supplemented by marbles and fabrics, which preserves the historical remains and reduces the waste of resources. Some simplest, most common paintings such as milky white glue, cement are applied with innovation, achiveing a sense of simplicity while avoiding pollution.
