The project used to be an old apartment located downtown, has been injected with new life as a result of the designer’s ingenuity. One priority of the remodeling of an old apartment lies in the repair of utility lines and reorganization of the layout and the flow while maximizing effective use of the space.

One priority of the remodeling of an old apartment lies in the repair of utility lines and reorganization of the layout and the flow while maximizing effective use of the space. Not only is full functionality in each section retained, but convenience in daily life is highly facilitated. Besides, an opening in the wall that lets in ample natural light makes the space look even brighter and more spacious.
Project Innovation/Need
Unlike conventional layouts, Joy of a New Life has the master bedroom moved closer to the public area, so that the sitting room, where a long time is spent, can have one more bathroom, making it more convenient for the dwellers.
One side of the double-sided storage at the foyer is a shoe cabinet, while the other side defines the dining space, thereby making for concealment for the space, and easing the concern of leaving everything in full exposure in Eastern feng hui. The peg board on one side allows for attachment of various items and serves as a bulletin board for family members to leave messages for one another as well.
Design Challenge
Given the small footage of the old apartment itself, and the long, narrow front and back balconies that take up lots of space and thus scales down the overall living space, the front balcony is remodeled with large a French window that ushers in even more natural light. With small children in the homeowner’s family, the playroom is placed along the axis of the flow, right next to the dining section, thereby minimizing blind spots and making it easier for adults to take care of the kids. Also, the space can be converted for other uses when the children grow up.
Sustainability
Though not much flexibility can be maintained in an old apartment, with the structural technician’s expertise and the designer’s cautious creativity and dynamic, Joy of a New Life’s duration of use can be extended after the remodeling. The best remodeling project to transform the old apartment in terms of beauty, safety and comfort is thus carried out.
