Project Overview

The Leisure Complex Center is located in the second phase of Zhongguancun Pharmaceutical Science and Technology Industrial Park, in a coastal city in North China called Weihai, in Shandong Province. The whole industrial park is divided into two areas, covering an area of 637 mu, with the south area covers an area of 380 mu, mainly about the production base of six kinds of pharmaceutical related products; and the north area covers an area of 257 mu, which is the pharmaceutical phase related product R & D and incubation base and supporting auxiliary facilities.

This project is located just in the southwest corner of the industrial park, where is close to the west and south main streets. The landscape garden of the project covers an area of 39,478 square meters, while the building covers an area of 4522 square meters, which presents a low-density leisure comprehensive center in the high-density factory buildings, providing a leisure and entertainment place with humanistic care for the internal staff, to meet their leisure, physical and mental health needs after daily work, therefore to reduce mental depression and injury brought by the mechanized work mode.

The whole building highlights the interpretation of Chinese traditional "simple but elegant", which forms different courtyard spaces with simple and unadorned white walls. With the expression of oriental plain and elegant space, the concept of "left blank" in oriental freehand brushwork is created to leave more reverie space for the experience of living space.

Project Brief

The project is aimed at preserving peoples’ health. The design continues the root idea of traditional oriental freehand brushwork, expressing feelings for mountains and rivers to stretch the body and mind. It also strengthens the experience of physical and mental sense of living environment between people and scenes. The overall layout refers to the traditional Chinese garden pattern of "vestibule and backyard", and realizes the visual sense of landscape step by step by means of different landscape windows and dislocation design; the vestibule buildings are connected in series through different corridors, and the design of mirror steel plate on the top of the corridor reflects the surrounding landscape environment and integrates with it; the footpath of undulating backyard landscape is used to connect with the viewer to bring the moving and comfortable experience to them.

The front area of the project is the eastern freehand brushwork style leisure courtyard which linked the western area by the corridor to be the leisure functional area, presenting coffee shop, book bar, exhibition hall, office, meeting and other functions to meet the comprehensive supporting services of daily leisure functions; while the southeast area is the leisure park with lake, which separates the experience area from the nearby park and traffic flow line of sight by means of using mountain lands and separating vehicles and people, so that people can fully integrate into the sense of nature, with no bothers from park buildings and internal vehicles.

Project Innovation/Need

The original site of the project was initially planned as the production base of personal care products. As a functional building in the industrial park, it conforms to the standard of the use efficiency of its commercial value; and this is also the result of the construction of the conventional industrial park.

However, in this project the purpose and function requirements of humanistic care for employees are introduced, and a leisure complex center with low building density is presented, thus a model of comprehensive industrial park with humanistic and spiritual care is created. While the transformation from conventional industrial plant to leisure complex can meet the requirements of employees' health needs, it is bound to indirectly improve the value and benefit of enterprise employees on the other hand, therefore to realize the sustainable and healthy development of human culture for enterprise employees, and drive the long-term pattern of small loss and large profits; at the same time, the comprehensive leisure center is completely open to the outside in the form of a park, which conveys the brand image of enterprises focusing on human and social responsibility.

The project will be used as a demonstration project of the local industrial development zone after completion while the relevant departments will also take it as a reference when approving the design scheme of the surrounding park. It also restricts the entry of some pollution manufacturing enterprises and improves the image of the entire Industrial Development Zone.

Design Challenge

In the design process, the main challenges faced by designers are as follows:

1. Site construction according to local conditions
At the beginning of the project development, it is a place where the soil is piled up in the region, and the ecological environment is relatively poor. According to the needs of the conventional park construction, it is necessary to comprehensively bulldoze the site. However, as a leisure complex center, it can make use of the situation, turn the soil pile into a mountain, make the pit into a lake, and surround it with curved roads, so as to realize the construction according to the local environment, present a pleasant landscape, and reduce the cost of comprehensive bulldozing and repairing.

2. Construction of gardens in North China
The winter climate in northern China is relatively cold, and it is difficult to maintain the green plants, where the green landscape will be gloomy. At the beginning of the design, the traditional Chinese abstract freehand brushwork technique was used to create the space artistic conception through the minimalist way; the different waterscape was used to create the elegant landscape; at the same time, through the scattered buildings, the landscape windows, the way of borrowing scenery from each other, and the different gray space, we can show the beauty of difference scene, to meet the aesthetic feeling of the northern garden for the human landscape.

Sustainability

In the process of project design, the designers paid special attentions to its sustainability, especially in the application of steel, waterscape and glass curtain wall.

Steel Products:
In order to present the Oriental lightness and elegance of the project, a large number of steel plates and white umbrella shaped roofs are used to collect rainwater and store them in the filtered water tank as the supply of landscape water on the ground, so as to realize the recycling and ecological use of waterscape.

Waterscape:
As the project is close to the seaside, it has sufficient water resources, and the waterscape can create an elegant realm of Oriental freehand brushwork. Therefore, while the project borrows plenty of waterscape to create the landscape, it realizes the utilization of local rich resources at the same time.

Glass Screen Wall:
Most of the project buildings used floor glass curtain walls to present an open style. Considering the climate change in northern China, all the buildings adopt double-layer energy-saving glass curtain walls, which are mainly divided into internal circulation and external circulation systems. They have common points and differences. The common feature is that the greenhouse effect is formed between the double-layer glass, and the overheated air in summer is excluded from the outdoor while the solar heat energy is removed in winter. It can save a lot of energy in winter and summer. And in the summer, it is necessary to use sunshade to prevent ultraviolet and strong thermal radiation.
