Project Overview

The project is located in the beautiful Cang Ma Mountain Tourist Resort in the west coast of Qingdao, China. With good ecological environment, the project site has beautiful hills and abundant ecological vegetation, which is known as an important ecological central region in the west coast area. The purpose of this project is to solve the resettlement needs of the surrounding four natural villages, and it is necessary to build economic development houses to provide basic guarantee for the economic income of villagers. The overall land scale of the project is about 130,000 square meters, with an above-ground construction volume of about 131,400 square meters, an underground construction area of 19,800 square meters, and a total construction area of nearly 151,200 square meters. The above-ground buildings are mainly divided into two types: residential and public buildings. Residential buildings are mainly 4-to-8 storey buildings, and public buildings are 2-to-3 storey commercial buildings.

Project Brief

The design needs to meet the resettlement for a total of more than 1,300 households. It should have pastoral characteristics, keep the old memories, and provide the villagers with cultural and entertainment humanistic care. Taken advantage of the natural landscape, the building design is themed with mountain residence, which is conveyed by the elements as red tiles, green trees, fences, stone mills, tea garden and the ancient well.

Project Innovation/Need

The west coast village has a profound cultural heritage, and the site also has the characteristics of mountains and waters in the "Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains". In such an environment with both context and nature, the architects insist on using design to solve the practical problems of the villagers. Respecting the villagers' lifestyle, the starting point of the design is the natural mountain landscape and themed with rural culture. The architects create rural residence that conforms to contemporary thinking and lifestyle. Continuing the spatial form of primitive villages, the design carries pastoral nostalgia and reflects modern civilization.
There is a gully in the middle of the site with luxuriant vegetation. In order to retain the old memory of the land, the architects flexibly constructed the landscape on the basis of the gully, in which dry creeks, flowers and trees, and pavilions are used to form the main landscape throughout north and south axis. Wild camellia is one of the local rarities, the landscape architects select and plant some excellent local varieties in the wide green belt of the main road on the south side, matching with bamboo forests, flowers, and trees with distinct levels. In order to enrich residents' cultural and entertainment needs, and combining with the future development plan of film and television culture in Cang Ma Mountain, four major supporting facilities have been set up in the public commercial street.

Design Challenge

One of the challenges is the limit of the terrain and topography, another is the lack of regional cultural characteristics. The level difference of the site is relatively high. The north is high and the south is low, and the east is high and the west is low. The altitude is 76.1 to 103.6 meters, and the maximum level difference is about 27.5 meters. Making full use of the slope terrain, the architects divide the terrain into a relatively independent platform group, which organically fits the terrain and retains the original mountain form of the site. The level difference is used to appropriately increase the residential density to improve land utilization. The land has an irregular long rectangles layout from the northeast to southwest. If the residential layout is parallel to the long axis of the land, it is difficult for the local residents to adapt the house. Therefore, the layout of the residences should be directed to the tilt angle within 5-15 degrees to form a group, weakening the boundary and organically combining with the natural landscape. To solve the lack of cultural characteristics, the architects use abstracted and simplified design elements as simple materials and flexible color matching in details, successfully rebuilding the style and features of Cang Ma Mountain Residence.

Sustainability

Priority is given to ecological protection in project planning. In order to keep the ecological system of Zang Ma Mountain, the low-impact development model is adopted. The cluster type and organic evacuation are embedded in the mountains and rivers, realizing the organic integration of the project and the context.
The overall project is designed in accordance with the national two-star standard for green construction and meets relevant requirements for energy conservation, land conservation, water conservation, and material conservation.
The overall project is designed in accordance with the national two-star standard for green construction and meets relevant requirements for energy conservation, land conservation, water conservation, and material conservation. In order not to affect the ecological community, the project did not fully excavate the basement, but only set up one-storey basement within the projection area of the single building. The northern part of China is relatively arid, and this project is located on a mountain slope. In order to control water and soil erosion and conserve the land, it is designed and configured with rainwater pipe cut-off, sinking green space, rainwater garden and water storage module Through the methods of drainage, storage and infiltration, the design can consolidate soil and preserve water, and create an ecological and sustainable development of the new countryside.
