Project Brief

This villa is designed on the basis of the ancient literati’s ideal style in the Southern Song Dynastic that creates a new eastern holiday lifestyle. The house is designed with the layouts progressively developed along the central baseline and with the classical craftsmanship of the Master of the Nets Garden in Suzhou, all of which displaying the sequential features of the ancient Chinese architectures in the contemporary house, and applying the aesthetics of Song Dynasty in the house decorations. The designer gives full expression of “literati space of Jiangnan” that exactly shows a mood of eastern mysterious aesthetics.

Project Need

The tall Chinese-style wood lattices are adorned along the hallway adjoining the spacious bedroom, in which the delicate floor lights, the classical wooden canopy bed, the elegant floor lamp and the verdant views outside the big Chinese-style windows are accordantly reconciled, where is a cozy sleeping space.

Design Challenge

The challenge for this project was to perfectly present the New Oriental resort lifestyle, giving the project both the kind of lifestyle that the Southern Song literati aspired to and the current blend of aesthetics and art.

Sustainability

Inspired by the architecture of the Southern Song Dynasty, the project has resulted in a fresh air system that makes efficient use of air flow principles to reduce reliance on air conditioning; a well-designed rainwater harvesting system that maximizes the use of rainwater to nourish plants and reduce the use of tap water; and large glass panels on the walls that bring natural light into the house to reduce daytime energy consumption.
