Project Brief

In order to steer away from the stereotypical image of an established Cantonese bakery, we want to introduce sleek and contemporary elements to suit the local demographic.

Neutral colour tones are used to create a minimal environment where the products are the focal point of the shop, this is highlighted with polished brass throughout the details of the store to inject a touch of sleek and opulence.

These are then tied up with lavish marble floor tiles to accentuate the sense of grandeur, while still provide playfulness with the irregular patterned graphic the brass trim in the floor tiles illustrate.

Project Innovation/Need

L'OVEN is not an ordinary or a simply expected Cantonese bakery in Sydney. They are a passionate team of artisans who takes pride in their creations of "classic with a modern twist" baked goods and desserts.

Our intention to elevate the appearance and representation of L'OVEN became apparent through the team's desire to reflect the client's vision of straying from the traditional aesthetic.

Through the use of contemporary material combinations such as terrazzo and polished brass paired with simplified geometric language, we created a warm and inviting space, yet sophisticated to reflect the brand. Our aim for the products to remain as the central focal point influenced the team's decision to select a neutral colour palette.

Design Challenge

Challenging aspects faced were the material options, placement, and ensuring everything would shine individually yet work cohesively together. The frame-less glass column that formed the double archways was more intricate than the other materials to work with, as it required accuracy in the installation process to have a seamless blend with the overall design.

Sourcing the marble became another complicated process as the client requested a marble floor finish that required a specific depth and dimension. We had to examine several options before concluding with the right style to meet the client's wish.

Sustainability

We support local businesses; therefore, we seek locally sourced furniture, materials and finishes for the majority of our projects and whenever possible. L'OVEN is another one of our many projects that used locally-sourced products such as mirrors, other decorative items and finishes.

For this particular project, we also teamed up with our local talent, a signage artist from Steady Hand Studio, who created the beautiful gold sign for L'OVEN's logo.
