Project Brief

Inheriting the ways of the world and hospitality of Oriental culture, the project adopts an appropriate philosophy to guide modern people to find a symbiotic relationship with themselves, others and nature. On a hillside, the building has a poetic courtyard, a patio with light and shadows, living and social spaces in both Chinese and Western styles. A human settlement enjoys multi functions and embraces nature as much as possible, embodying a nearly perfect design practice.

Project Innovation/Need

Leaning on verdant hills, the project covers an area of 1800m2, and is blessed with ultra-low-density land resources in the prosperous city. The advantages of location and landscape determine that the project has higher demands for innovation and forward planning. Through accurate calculations of the hills’ gradient, a split-levelstructure with optimal lighting is constructed. And the patio structure in traditional residence is introduced into the space, realizing smooth interaction between the indoor and outdoor with no out-of-sight corners and dark corners indoors. Discarding traditional partitions and separations of a space, the project presents elegant and multi-functional living and social spaces.

Design Challenge

The project integrates spatial environment, landscape resources and supporting facilities. From preservation of resources andenvironmentand construction of building on a hillside, to interior landscape and tone of scenes, even to every ornament, all elements follow the same design and implementation concepts. Therefore, it was a great challenge that the designers were supposed to have comprehensive abilities to control the whole design. Moreover, a huge-scale Taishan stone was transported into the interior by a crane and arranged at the lowest level with sleepers paved underneath. This was also a challenge as well as a creation in spatial operation. And the interior micro landscape surrounding the huge stone seems natural as the outdoor landscape, endowing the space unique value and features.

Sustainability

To reshape classic Chinese garden in a modern way is the best interpretation that the project respects the relationship between architecture and nature. The architectural design leverages the surroundings, preserving nature in its original form with minimal intervention. The square water feature and waterfall-like landscape adorn the courtyard. The hillside is also included into the visiting route, and the outdoor viewing platforms have 22 centuries-old fruit trees as nodes along the visiting path. Four patios are installed into four corners of the building to realize the free interaction between the interior and exterior of the whole space.
