Project Brief

The basic design concept of this project is to create a “citizens-shared” building, rather than just emphasizing its memorial and symbolic status. It aims to bring people together to use the spaces spontaneously, and interact with the environment, building and other people.
The project combines different functional areas together with a huge roof. Under the roof, there are completely open grey spaces between functional spaces. Those gray spaces are intertwined with the foyers of all functional areas, landscape facilities and waterscapes, without clear functional or spatial boundaries, which allow people to traverse and enter freely. Since they are completely open, the citizens can feel totally relaxed and unrestrained and hence more spontaneous activities can be triggered.
Other than integrating into the city with open arms, the project also focuses on the interaction between all elements. Under the roof are continuous grey spaces, as well as dotted sunken courtyards, squares and foyers. The linear connection of activity spaces increases the possibility of events happening and interaction among citizens.
Every citizen is able to feel the charm of public urban life there. They can enter the building from the plazas on different elevations, thus bring landscape indoors and establishing a close relationship between the plazas and the architecture.

Project Innovation/Need

1. Under the roof are continuous grey spaces, as well as dotted sunken courtyards, squares and foyers. The linear connection of activity spaces increases the possibility of events happening and interaction among citizens.
The enormous roof serves as a activity platform on 2F. Together with the sunken courtyards, it provides opportunities for interaction between functional spaces, people, people and the building, as well as people and the city, thus rendering a public architecture that the citizens can have affinity to.
2. The project adopts contemporary design ideas and approaches, utilizes modern construction logic, new materials and technologies to respond to the functional and cultural demands of the era, and thereby resulting in a cultural building that fits into the demands of the citizens and leads the way for modern healthy lifestyles.

Design Challenge

The challenge is to create a “citizens-shared” building, rather than just emphasizing its memorial and symbolic status. It aims to bring people together to use the spaces spontaneously, and interact with the environment, building and other people. In order to achieve this, the project combines different functional areas together with a huge roof. The enormous roof serves as a activity platform on 2F. Together with the sunken courtyards, it provides opportunities for interaction between functional areas, people, people and the building, as well as people and the city, thus rendering a public architecture that the citizens can have affinity to.

Sustainability

Other than focusing on the publicness and openness of the building, the project design also pays attention to locality. The relationship between the building and the city, relevance to citizens’ lifestyles, and response to local climate characteristics, are all taken into consideration. Through analyzing and considering each element on the site as well as reasonably organizing architectural spaces and landscapes, the project strives to generate more interaction with the city.
Response to climate
The giant roof connects all functional spaces, demarcates the square, and responds to the rainy climate of Yancheng, which ensures that spaces are available for activities even in raining days.
Response to landscape resources
Since the building is adjacent to Mazhong River, waterscapes are incorporated into landscape design, such as “Hundred Water Plaza” and “Wetlands Park”, which are all accessible. The use of water elements perfectly echoes the surrounding river.
Blending into the city
The design takes full account of the building’s integration with surrounding environment. The layout of functional spaces, organization of circulations and landscape design are based on various factors of the plot. Sunken courtyards are added to enhance the integration between the building and the land.
The project adopts contemporary design ideas and approaches, uses modern construction logic, new materials and technologies to respond to the functional and cultural needs of the era, and thereby resulting in a cultural building that fits into the demands of the citizens and leads the way for modern healthy lifestyles.
