Project Overview

Smart Challenge is an exhibition held in Hong Kong International ICT Expo. As the client’s request, they had five zones in one booth and each of them represented different department. During the fair, they showed innovative technology and system applied in public facilities and system. Moreover, they provided interactive section for the visitor to try out their new technology. The design element mainly used in a linear pattern and bright color to symbolize the innovation and new era. Also, bright color provided an open-minded image for the government.

Project Brief

Innovation was like the spotlight which is sharp, creative and smart. There were five departments launch the smart design with innovative technology and system, each one was unique and smart. Although it separated in different teams, they were as a team of government. Each of the new technology and system could combine and develop new application in the future. It established a positive image of government which is creative, innovative and open-minded. Being representative of international city, the role of the government should stay in open-mindedness and lead the trend of innovation development and creativity.

Project Innovation/Need

Comparing to tradition exhibition design of government, it was always be squared and simple which only provided the informative showcase. As the theme of the fair was smart living, we used a circular design which is special from the others and eye-catching. This special design concept not only made the booth more unique, but also established a new image of government which is innovative and open-minded. Being representative of international city, the role of the government should stay in open-mindedness and lead the trend of innovation development and creativity. As there were five departments, the new technologies were applied in different scenario. We based on the technology application usage to design the specific environmental conditions, such as the Smart Lamppost Prototype. The decoration of this section is the exact location of it. The name of each zone was used in lightbox which is clear and attractive.

Design Challenge

The most challenging part of the design was to connect separated parts of whole exhibition. Because of the public aisle, the whole booth was separated in two parts and based on the venue regulation, public aisle should keep clear. To solve this problem, we followed the circular design element and setup a rounded short panel on the edge of the public aisle on both sides. It made the center of the showroom.

Sustainability

Materials selection mainly focuses on wood, glass and LED light. The scale of the booth is large that wood structure was the main support material. To increase visual spacing, we widened the space between each of the wooden laths, like to combine with lots of layers. Also, we designed some hollow parts on the wall that light could pass through it. The name of each zone was used in lightbox which is sharp and attractive.
