Project Overview

Chas Clarkson’s Giant Harlequin Bauble installation for Property NSW is a key experiential element of their annual Christmas campaign. A decorative statement piece that transforms the Darling Harbour foreshore precinct into a contemporary, celebratory landscape which locals, commuters and tourists of all ages can engage with day and night.

Visitors are delighted to discover that the Giant Harlequin Bauble is an Instagramer’s delight with multiple vistas for that perfect Christmas post.
The brilliantly coloured geodesic 7 metre bauble acts like a festive beacon, visually creating intrigue. It marks the commencement of the Darling Harbour summer Christmas calendar of events. Its architectural whimsy draws people into the precinct, enticing them to want to experience more. The outer shell houses a semi-private activation for visitors to create more shareable fun.

Project Brief

Property NSW “Darling Harbour Christmas Marker” brief was issued in 2017, detailing their desire for an external contemporary festive installation that would become a Sydney Christmas landmark and synonymous with the Darling Harbour precinct. The design must appeal to families, tourists and the Sydney business community.

The brief detailed that the installation would be located on the Darling Harbour foreshore precinct, that it must be designed to endure the Australian summer climate and comply with all of the stringent City of Sydney’s codes & regulations. The Christmas marker would need to have a safe working life, be installed and dismantled within a two day period and remain relevant for five years.

Project Innovation/Need

This activation changes each Christmas delivering newness and ties in with the Darling Harbour Marketing campaign.
For the second year of the Giant Harlequin Bauble installation, Chas Clarkson updated the colour scheme and applied a holographic UV finish to give the Darling Harbour foreshore precinct a point of difference for Christmas 2018. The iridescent silver shimmers in the daylight while the colour changing neon flex illuminates taking centre stage at night, always ready for that perfect picture.

Design Challenge

The brief detailed that the installation would be located on the Darling Harbour foreshore precinct with hundreds of thousands of people passing through, that it must be designed to endure the Australian summer climate and comply with all of the stringent City of Sydney’s codes & regulations. The Christmas marker would need to have a safe working life, be installed and dismantled within a two day period and remain relevant for five years.

User Experience

The Chas Clarkson creative and technical team carefully chose products for this project that are durable and recyclable. The Giant Harlequin Bauble installation, was produced by a local and international network of suppliers who are all striving to lower their carbon footprint and ethically source their manufacturing materials. All the elements within the installation can be broken down and stripped into their various base materials (such as aluminium, polycarbonate, etc.) and be recycled. The lighting component of this project was selected for its life span and stability in prolonged exposure to the elements, enabling the product to be repurposed for future projects.
