Project Overview

Melbourne Water lives up to its tagline - enhancing life and liveability - in all sorts of ways that add immeasurably to the enjoyment and quality of the life of the city.

It wanted to showcase projects and initiatives on its Your Say portal on the Melbourne Water website to engage with a broad audience - capturing not just the substance but the spirit of its initiatives.

The challenge was to bring together and illustrating a series of diverse themes that ranged from water protection, biodiversity, building infrastructure, collaborating with the community, working partnerships, improving the environment and creating community spaces.

Project Brief

GrowCreative was engaged by Melbourne Water to develop illustrative tiles that could be implemented on the home page of its Your Say portal. (yoursay.melbournewater.com.au).

This was an opportunity to create a series of illustrations to hero initiatives and projects that capture the spirit of Melbourne Water’s role in the life of Melbourne.

It was essential that the illustrations show the positive nature and lifestyle in line with the organisation’s tagline: enhancing life and liveability.

The objective of the project was to reflect the diverse community led work Melbourne Water delivers organisation wide and tell the Melbourne Water community story.

Project Innovation/Need

Melbourne Water wanted a new home page designed to focus on user experience and overcome the limitation of space and bring to life a narrative about Melbourne Water and the way they support the liveability of our communities.

GrowCreative created a series of info graphic tiles that articulated Melbourne Water services and key touchpoints with the community.

The other key objective was to bring more energy and colour to the home page and tell the Melbourne Water in the community story.

Design Challenge

The initial challenge was to bring these diverse themes to life as a group - but with each tile illustrating its own individual story.

Using the existing colour palette as a base, we developed an illustration style that captured the energy, vibrance and optimistic community feel of involvement - whether from Melburnians or partner organisations.

In effect, it was about generating an instant and positive response with bright and uplifting visuals that invited the viewer to feel good about getting involved.

Each tile encompasses how Melbourne Water operates and contributes in that particular space. Together they create a powerful picture that capture the spirit of the organisation’s activities throughout the community.

Effectiveness

This project is an excellent example of the value of partnership with GrowCreative involved with the Melbourne Water team at every stage.

It’s a way of working that generates ideas as the campaign developed - there is no substitute for really understanding the client and its audience over time.

Melbourne Water was delighted with the results not just in terms of visitors to the site but in the creation a strong graphic approach that can be extended over time.

The audience in broad terms encompasses Melbourne Water customers, engaged community members and stakeholders participating in their projects. There has been positive word of mouth feedback from participants.

Since the redesign and launch of our ‘Your Say’ engagement platform in September 2017 there have been 17,000 unique visitors to the site to date with an average 5000 unique visitors per month.

This award celebrates creativity and innovation in the traditional or digital visual representation of brand, values, ideas and messages across type and illustration projects. Consideration given to clarity of communication and the matching information style to audience.
