Project Overview

The restaurant industry moves fast, and if you’re not one step ahead of your competition, you could be falling behind. With incredibly tight margins, every sale, employee, and ingredient can be a deciding factor in whether you succeed or fail. Upserve, one of the largest and fastest-growing companies in the restaurant technology space, answers this challenge with their Breadcrumb POS solution, which puts everything restaurateurs need to know in one place, providing real-time guidance to unlock the power of their menu, workforce and guest habits. Thousands of restaurants use Breadcrumb to process over $11 billion in annual sales, manage relationships with more than 32 million active diners, and crunch the numbers on 23 million meals per month.

Project Brief

Intuitive and user-friendly, Breadcrumb is the leading cloud-based restaurant POS, offering full service management for front-of-house and back-of-house operations. Restaurant owners, managers, and employees can use the platform for:
-In-store and online orders as well as payments processing
-Table management - evaluating table turnover times, reservations, as well as check splitting capabilities
-Staff management - tracking server performance and value
-Actionable analytics on menu item performance - broken down into simple graphics
-Inventory management - tracking average food usage and limiting food waste
-Online ordering - with automatic updates to the website from the POS system (if prices change or a menu item runs out)
-Employee training - a training mode functionality, which allows employees try out the software without affecting any data
-Logbooks - built-in shift notes allow employees to track the time needed to accept, prepare, complete and deliver orders
Additionally, unlike many POS systems, Breadcrumb’s cloud-based platform allows restaurant owners to manage their operation from a mobile device - freeing them from hours in the back office. Breadcrumb also offers integrations with leading restaurant industry vendors including Resy, Chowly, Grubhub, and CorkGuru and many more. On average, Breadcrumb users see an increase in sales of 30% and save up to 48% compared to traditional pos system due to Breadcrumb’s measurably streamlined operations, intuitive design, and mobile workspace.

Project Need

Restaurants run on extremely tight margins in which every minute is either a dollar made or a dollar wasted. Technology can help to ensure that processes are maximally expedited, but it must function seamlessly. That is why Breadcrumb POS is built to give restaurants the critical solutions they need to run smoother operations, train and empower staff, and deliver exceptional hospitality all on a single platform. Many POS solutions are computer-based programs with complex interfaces and processes. But with Breadcrumb, restaurateurs can stand on the floor of their restaurant, iPad in hand, and see how a menu item is performing while watching diners’ reactions as their meal is placed before them. Breadcrumb is a one-stop solution to running a coherent restaurant operation, designed to be easily learned and operated

User Experience

Unlike other restaurant POS operators, Breadcrumb allows for custom POS configuration tailor-made to each restaurant’s specific needs. Taking it one step further, it is customizable to the type of food service operation: bars, pizzerias, cafes, wineries, bakeries, QSRs, and drive-thru's. Breadcrumb users can also access easily digestible reports on menu and server performance that drive smarter decisions. From the product mix to a breakdown of spending habits among new versus repeat customers, Breadcrumb lets users know what is bringing customers back. And for the employees in a rush, an expedited search function is available for quick access.
The platform is always making improvements to further streamline processes, and has standout features including:
Online Ordering -- restaurants can integrate online orders with Breadcrumb for added revenue without the added labor. So, when a restaurant has run out of an item, the online menu quickly updates to reflect the change, eliminating the need to call into third party services or wait hours to see changes.
Training Mode -- new staff can run through their tasks using the same interface they’ll experience on the job. Transactions are not included in reporting and payments are not processed, so new servers can practice workflows like swiping credit cards, splitting checks, comps, voids, etc. – without having to void everything at the end.
Hassle-Free Loyalty Program-- a loyalty program driven by credit card and cash back credits. The program is customizable, provides insights on behavior, and doesn’t require punch cards--only customer credit cards.

Project Marketing

Upserve uses several tactics to market Breadcrumb POS to potential customers, including interactive, online free tours of the product, providing case studies, customer reviews, and product videos on its website, running an industry blog for restaurant professionals (https://upserve.com/restaurant-insider/), and releasing and pitching out news around key product updates. An integral piece of the marketing strategy involves analyzing data from Upserve’s thousands of restaurants across the country and compiling the nationally-scaled learnings into reports. These reports are released quarterly and include data on trending menu items, tipping and turnover trends and much more, and they act as a resource for other industry professionals. Working in tandem with the reports, Upserve actively pitches out key data pieces from each to major media and publications, in order to spread the word about their product and its capabilities. Upserve’s metrics have been featured in publications like the Wall Street Journal, New York Post, Buzzfeed, and Men’s Health. This effort not only drives product sales, but elevates Upserve as an industry resource for restaurant and culinary data.

Project Privacy

Upserve’s focus on security extends through everything they do and Breadcrumb POS is built to be as secure as possible. From annual PCI compliance assessments, to employing a team of security experts, the Breadcrumb system aims to lead the industry in Payments, POS, and Data security standards and best practices. Breadcrumb employs a combination of firewall barriers, encryption techniques and authentication procedures, among others, to maintain the security of each online session and to protect Upserve accounts and systems from unauthorized access. All communications of passwords or other sensitive data between a computer and Upserve are encrypted; this enables client and server applications to communicate in a way that is designed to prevent eavesdropping, tampering and message forgery.
Breadcrumb creates a guest profile by collecting credit card data encoded on the card by the issuer (including the cardholder name and credit card number, which is obtained once the card is swiped) and then processes it together with the customer’s transaction history at the restaurant: their food orders, their preferences, etc. These insights allow restaurants to deliver a personalized, unique and ultimately beneficial experience for their customers – never one that feels intrusive.
