Project Overview

Beasts of Balance is an award-winning game of skill, strategy and creation. Often compared to Jenga for the 21st century, the game tasks players to stack intricate towers of beautifully designed “Beasts.” As they build, they scan the pieces through the play-base and into the accompanying app to discover mythical worlds of unique creatures. With each addition to the tower, players must be careful to keep the digital world in balance. But be careful, if the tower is knocked down, it’s game over!

Project Brief

Beasts of Balance is now beloved by kids and adults of all ages as a go-to for game nights! We’ve been recognized by the toy and tech industries for our unique combination of physical and digital gaming!
So what is it? Beasts of Balance is an augmented reality stacking game of dexterity, strategy and creation. Thought of as Jenga for the 21st century, Beasts of Balance challenges players work together to stack a tower of "beasts" while scanning each piece through the play base into the connected app as they build. Within the app, magical worlds of creatures are created, and the players must keep the world in balance as they reach new high scores. But they must be careful: if the tower is knocked down, then it's game over! New for 2018 are the first expansions to Beasts of Balance, including a competitive gameplay mode called Battles and new beast play-pieces such as a flamingo, angler fish, chameleon and Legendary Beasts. In Battles, players use augmented reality Battle cards to scan and fight against their opponents to become ruler of the digital world.

Project Need

We believe that technology shouldn’t divide us, but bring us together and improve quality of life. This applies to gaming, as we look to foster face-to-face interaction between families and friends. Our goal is to take everything that’s inspiring and entertaining about digital play, and merge it with a design approach that’s rooted in a practical understanding of home and family life. Our games are unique, as we combine tabletop, digital gaming and imaginative play like never before!

User Experience

Beasts of Balance is easy to learn for anyone ages 7 to 107! The play base comes with a sticker of instructions for simple set-up, and then when you connect to the app, you’ll be guided through the tools you need to play. In the cooperative mode, players work together to stack the tower and follow the games presented in the app. In the new competitive Battles mode, players fight each other in a split-screen version of the game to become the ruler of the land.

Project Marketing

We first launched Beasts of Balance on Kickstarter in February 2016. This platform has provided us with a very supportive community of enthusiasts for the game. So much so, that we launched a second Kickstarter campaign in July 2017 for the first expansions! In addition to our Kickstarter supporters, we market direct to consumers through our social media platforms on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram - @BeastsofBalance, at conventions and events, and in major retail outlets including the Apple Store, Amazon and John Lewis. We also engage a public relations campaign, through which the game has been featured in countless prominent media and bloggers; including Engadget, Forbes, Kotaku, Parade, Family Circle, Red Tricycle, HuffPost, LA Times, Woman’s Day and high profile UK publications including The Guardian, The Independent, The Telegraphy and Financial Times.
