Project Overview

Simtek developed a smart sensor to help the over 55 million gun owners in the US and around the world monitor their guns - regardless of how they’re stored. The way Simtek works is simple but effective: place Simtek in any enclosed space, and when that space is accessed, you get a text message alert over a cellular connection (triggered by light or motion).

Project Brief

Simtek is reinventing the way people think about gun safety and technology. It all starts with a simple notification; a wife is supposed to be at work, a roommate isn’t supposed to know where the gun is stored; a son is supposed to be in school - but suddenly you get a text alert that someone accessed the weapons. It’s a moment like this where Simtek helps people identify theft, prevent suicide and accidents, and increase peace of mind. These are the important moments.

Project Innovation/Need

Simtek is a smart sensor for more than gun spaces - it’s applications are versatile: monitor a storage unit, a boat, glovebox, or virtually any space that you store your valuables in. Best of all, Simtek works in over 200 countries around the globe - without any additional setup.

Design Challenge

Simtek is designed to identify access and provide information for the user to act on, not prevent access. Traditional safety and security that is available today for guns, including smart gun technology, have low adoption because they can restrict or interfere with the use of the weapon. Most gun owners buy guns for defense - so quick access is important. Simtek is designed to work in any existing safe or space where guns are stored - and does not restrict the weapons in any way.
