$4.2 billion of designed projects has been awarded in this year’s Sydney Design Awards at a presentation held at the Oxford Art Factory in Darlinghurst.

“This year’s Sydney Design Awards demonstrates just how important design is to the Sydney economy with projects totalling more than $4.2 billion recognised,” Sydney Design Awards and THE DESIGN 100 Founder Mark Bergin said.

Construction giant Lend Lease was named Design Champion, recognising the company's commitment to design across Sydney and their involvement in the Sydney Design Awards through a number of successful projects.

Property branding and marketing agency Hoyne took out best large studio with six winning nominations. Focus Creative was awarded the best mid-sized design studio with half a dozen successful projects.

The best small studio went to DPN, property investors and developers who are investing heavily in design and took home three design awards.

According to Mr Bergin, a large number of projects stemmed from the property and construction, digital transformation and enterprise wide design sectors.

“There are currently three forces driving the Sydney design market. The construction industry continues to boom and this is having a direct positive impact on Sydney’s design market. Digital transformation is also in full flight.” Mr Bergin said.

“However the most significant is a shift towards Enterprise Wide Design, where design moves out of the department and into the boardroom.

“Smart organisations and corporates are realising how role design can play in improving customer experiences, enabling them to stand out from competitors and increase returns for shareholders.”

In total 108 Sydney Design Awards were presented - 38 gold, 66 silver and 4 best of categories - across the design disciplines of space, object, visual and experience.

''Year on year we see a growing sophistication in the Sydney design marketplace. This year is no exception.

“The courage demonstrated by clients and creative teams is the powerhouse behind a strong pool of award winners,” Mr Bergin added.

''This is the fifth year of the Sydney Design Awards and we are extremely proud and excited about the success of the awards program” said Mr Bergin.

“We look forward to its continuing growth and further involvement from leading design organisations, studios and brands as we work together to strengthen the design economy and increase awareness about the importance and unquestionable benefits of good design.''
