Project Brief

Eric is an avid home chef/foodie who loves to cook for his friends and family.

Cooking a dinner party meal is a peculiar environment, unlike cooking for the family or cooking in a restaurant. Eric wants to cook the perfect gourmet meal, but is constantly interrupted by friends wanting to chat. He often leaves the kitchen and can easily miss hearing an alarm go off. It drove Eric crazy to go into the kitchen to find the alarm had gone off with no idea how of much time had passed since it went off! Or, just as bad, he'd go back to the kitchen after an interruption and couldn’t remember what time he set the timer to because it’s now running!

Eric looked long and hard for a solution, and couldn’t find anything that covered all the bases.

He needed a cooking timer app with

· At least 12 timers

· The amount of time that has elapsed since the alarm sounded

· The initial timer setting always displayed

· See the status of all the timers at once

· Name the timers

· See the finish time in real time

· Large easy to hit buttons (even with your elbow)

· No adverts

Project Need

The major difference in this timer app is the ability to see and use the elapsed time after the alarm has sounded – not only for missed alarms but also to time intervals between dishes without having to re-set anything and to add specific amounts of time to a dish.

The ability to see the timer status from across the kitchen is amazing and being able to pre-program a complicated menu makes it easy

User Experience

The attractive, clean and logical user interface makes it really easy for anyone to use the Well Done Cooking Timers.

A consumer review of cooking timer apps and devices helped inform the features, user interface and experience of the app.

The user interface provides each timer with it's own colour coded module based on the progression of the timer. Each timer can be given its own name such as 'fish' or 'main course' and its own alarm sound. Once set, the timer progresses from green, yellow and red to indicate how much time is left for that item.

The timers all offer real time countdowns and the dashboard shows the status of the 12 timers:

o White – not in use
o Green – counting down
o Amber (flashing) – within a minute of the alarm
o Red (flashing) – timer finished and counting down

Feedback includes

"Now that we have the timer, it has transformed the kitchen, I’m so much more relaxed when cooking, I can set it on the fly or pre-set it for the complicated meal and see at a glance how everything is going. Everyone who’s tried it loves it, and we have some professional Chefs who are going to trial it in their Restaurant kitchens. We use it for so many other things too, like the exercise workout, the 20-minute Nap, remembering to get the laundry in before going out and so much more."

Project Marketing

Marketing initially focussed on social media channels to educate users on how to get the best outcome from their new app and seek reviews.

Due to the large number of chefs and foodies using Twitter, the channel was chosen to create and share cooking information. Well Done Cooking Timers gained over 2000 followers in the first month and after after months has close to 4000 followers.

A weekly blog that provides great dinner party suggestions and timings for an enthusiastic online home and restaurant chef community has been launched. It will capture the names and emails of this community for future direct marketing opportunities such as affiliate programs that are relevant to this niche. To build a community that make cooking fun and an enjoyable experience for everyone.

Future promotional opportunities will include editorial in luxury consumer and hospitality industry publications to reach the target audience.
