Project Overview
The development proposal is located in Sydney. It is for a new 1 – 2 storey church to accommodate 80 – 100 people for church services. The proposed church is a new church run by the Korean Catholic Church to cater for special events including weddings, baptisms and funeral mass.
The ground floor shall include chapel, entrance hall, servery and amenities and the first floor shall include 2 x valedictory rooms and ante room overlooking chapel. The development proposal includes 22 x parking spaces.

Project Brief
The intention of our design would this project to meet the both functional and symbolic architecture.
The development has been designed consistent with its intended use as an addition to the existing Church facility. Also our approach has been widely applied and formed the basis of influential person of the first Korean-born Catholic priest, Saint Andrew Kim Taegon, who was persecuted and executed in early 1900s. Our design represent the symbolism architecture with a strong degree of personification and historical references of Saint Andrew Kim Taegon to his memorial of his martyrdom to the Catholic church history in Korea.
Project Innovation/Need
One of client's design briefs was to design the monument of structure that was explicitly created to commemorate the martyrs including Saint Andrew Kim Taegon of their remembrance of historic times and cultural heritage.
So the idea has approached to the forms and materials including ;
Each Stained glass shows Saint Andrew Kim Taegon with the graphics and kept the traditional form of the Catholic Church architecture.
For the shape of the building, the front facade represent the pain and suppress of the Christianity in the past when many Christians were persecuted including Saint Andrew Kim Taegon.
Angled facade directs as a focal point to the Martyrdom in South Korea where Saint Andrew Kim Taegon was executed.
Design Challenge
The building design includes a range of material and finishes to add visual interest to the facades and identify the church from the public domain. The materials and finishes include brick textured wall, timber feature screens, a colorbond roof and timber framed windows and doors.
The landscape plan includes the planting of a variety of trees, shrubs and hedges and accent plants to be mixed Australia and Korean species plant to represent the harmony. The design works will positively contribute to the streetscape setting of the proposal noting the subject site is current devoid of vegetation.
Sustainability
We understand that the sustainability in modern architecture is becoming so important.
The materials we specified were all environmental friendly such as grass parking mats, non-voc paint, recycled timber batten cladding, and using high efficient water and energy equipment.
The landscaping also includes the recycled timber chip and retaining all existing trees to minimized the waste from the construction and also to save the lives.
As an architect, we will coordinate the contractor during the construction to seeks to minimize the negative environmental impact of buildings by efficiency and moderation in the use of materials and energy.

This award celebrates the design process and product of planning, designing and constructing form, space and ambience that reflect functional, technical, social, and aesthetic considerations. Consideration given for material selection, technology, light and shadow. The project can be a concept, tender or personal project, i.e. proposed space.
