Winner

Project Overview

RailSafe Website, sponsored by Safety, Environment, Quality & Risk Directorate (SEQR) in Sydney Trains, provides accurate, up to date information about safety standards and policies that hundreds of rail workers and contractors rely upon to.
Squiz worked with Sydney Trains project team to understand their requirements for a responsive site that connected with their internal systems and served as a single source of truth for all internal and external stakeholders.

Project Brief

Sydney Trains came to us to upgrade the RailSafe website that would tick a lot of boxes: it had to integrate with internal systems such as HP TRIM and allow for maximum findability of information. There was also a concern about having documents relating to safety procedures presented in multiple places and formats, all the documents need to updated and synchronised at the same time.
Responsive web design was another priority for the RailSafe website - contractors and track workers were increasingly using their mobile devices to access critical information and the site needed to accommodate that in a seamless, intuitive way.

Project Innovation/Need

HP TRIM, a Records Management System, is used in Sydney Trains to manage all critical safety documents to ensure that all the correct procedures are properly reviewed, maintained and managed in accordance with strict procedure. Rather than creating multiple versions of each document, the solution utilised the inbuilt TRIM connecter in our powerful Matrix CMS to pull through the latest documents. This meant that SEQR team could manage their data in one place and trust that the documents on the website was the most up to date, accurate information.
We worked with Funnelback, a search company owned by Squiz, to implement rich, dynamic search and filtering capability of the RailSafe document repository. Due to the nature of their business, RailSafe’s documents are heavy with acronyms and jargon, which can traditionally hinder the effectiveness of site search. Funnelback, however, easily translates any acronyms and jargon into plain English to deliver a user-friendly search.

Design Challenge

Responsive design was a critical component of this project - it wasn’t enough that it just looked nice; it had to be intuitive and functional. Track workers and external contractors rely on the site whilst they’re on the job, and it’s crucial that they can quickly and easily access the exact information they’re looking for.
We worked closely with the Sydney Trains project team to implement a site where form followed function, making sure that information was highly discoverable and accessible to whoever needs it, wherever they are, whatever screen they’re using.

Future Impact

Squiz has a forward-thinking approach to sustainability. All of our offices have strict green policies that enforce the use of energy saving LED lighting and recycled paper. We also encourage staff to recycle as much as possible by limiting the availability of regular garbage bins and having dedicated recycling bins throughout the office.
