Project Brief
All of the space seems independent with their functions, but actually they are connected as a whole: they are all spaces for parent-child interaction.
The designer takes imagination of childlike fun and the vision of a happy home as the main axis of the design, creating a warm space for the family.
Project Innovation/Need
The staircase divides the living room and dining room in the public area. Artistic atmosphere is created with chandeliers. The space is filled with the female owner’s favorite artist Yoshitomo Nara’s drawings. Hermes Oange is used as the main tone of the space as it’s the female owner’s favorite color. The wall beside the staircase is a chalkboard wall and the drawing on it is designer’s sincere blessings to the family.
The children’s bedroom is like a dream castle. The cloud-shaped bookshelf and the Yoshitomo Nara’s drawings create a romantic fairy tale atmosphere. High standard certified children's slide and toys are selected, which can meet current needs for amusement and can be removed when the children grow up. As an important space for parent-child interaction, a bunk bed is designed in the space. In this case, parents can accompany children not only during daytime but also at night.
On the top floor, there is a bar designed for the male owner, meeting the needs of wine tasting and home theatre. The small study on the fourth floor is a quiet reading space designed for the female owner.
Design Challenge
In response to the owner’s three demands, the designer creates a space that the owners yearning for by ingenious design, arrangement of colors, and changes of elements with childlike fun. The three requirements are: 1. Partially renovate the living room, dining room and master bedroom; 2. Install a children's slide in children’s room; 3. Transform the top floor to a home cinema.
Sustainability
The whole space is applied with green building material, using F1 low-formaldehyde plywood. The children's bedroom is applied with Araucoply plywood and eco-friendly, water-based wood finish from OSMO as the coating.
Flügger Dekso 5 paint, known for its eco-friendly benefits, is applied in the kitchen and bedrooms, for the partial colored walls. It allows kids to play without parents worrying about safety, and helps lower hazardous materials and allergies in the air.
Granite Ciscoat, which is a green building material of anti-UV, acid/alkali resistant, low-formaldehyde, with heat insulation, is used on the rooftop.
Considering the safety of the space and the possible changes in the future, the designer ends up choosing toys that are labeled by international safety certification. In this case, parents can accompany kids while they are still little, and remove the slide after they grow up. Thus, when they become teens, a complete bedroom can be set up with less possible waste from redecoration.
