Project Overview

Trident Booksellers & Cafe in Boulder, Colorado have responded to the closure of their business to physical customers in response to the COVID-19 pandemic by offering online orders of 'mystery bags' of books, curated by Trident staff.

Project Context

As it's income dwindled, and 80% of staff were laid off, co-owner Andrew Hyde half-jokingly floated the idea of mystery bags on Twitter — to a rousing response, selling over 300 bags in a short amount of time which necessitated re-hiring more staff in order to meet demand.

Project Innovation

For $50, customers receive 4-6 books picked out by Trident staff — based on a general prompt by the customer, or left entirely up to Trident, in addition to a bag of coffee beans or tea.

Orders within the city of Boulder are hand delivered by a member of Trident (when not too cold), or available for pickup at the store — or simply mailed to customers worldwide.

The mystery bag concept has helped the traditionally 'offline' Trident stand a fighting chance against the ravages of economic depression, pivot toward establishing a presence in the online marketplace, as well as give Boulder residents a novel way to support their local community.
