Project Overview
In the midst an uncertain time, Facebook are releasing two new caring and compassionate 'reactions' across its Facebook and Messenger apps.
Organisation
Project Context
Responding to the idea that a hug reaction was a core expression missing from the standard set of reactions available on the platform, Facebook has jumped on the need for a broader range expression in a time of increased social media usage necessitated by social distancing.
Project Innovation
Comprising of an emoji hugging a heart, and a vibrating heart on the Messenger platform, Facebook has broadened the emotional depth of its platform in a time of crisis where the usual physical care gestures are verboten.
As Fidji Simo, Head of the Facebook App expressed "If any situation calls for more emotional bandwidth on social media, it’s coping with a global crisis that has spread sickness and death, grief and dread, loneliness and isolation and so much financial hardship."
Social and Community-Oriented Design - Digital
Social design applies a design methodology and intervention to tighten the social fabric that holds us together. Addressing issues of social inequality, such as poverty or social isolation, social design is the pathway to a more just and sustainable society. Community-oriented design is a human-centered and participatory design practice that emphasises the betterment of local communities through the improvement of public facilities, equipment, identity and experience.
The digital category celebrates design outcomes across digital platforms and includes motion design, front end and interaction design, user experience design and digital product design.
