The primary function of the building is to blur the boundaries between House and Art Gallery.
Every aspect and space of the JARtB House and it’s site has been designed so that art plays a central theme for the various programs and functions
Spaces and programs are linked through art privacy, translucency and light are mediated and expressed through art.

Art now has function!

Circulation is no longer relegated to anonymous utility; circulation becomes the primary program. It transforms into the art gallery.

Project Brief

JARtB House reconnects the abandoned notion that Art and Architecture are
s e p a r a t e techne.

Part House and part Art Gallery. The synthesis of the two typologies are redefined into a singular expression. A new hybrid is institutionalised.

Art is used to connect, inform and program space instead of program containing it. Art is not defined as ‘in’ or ‘on’ the building,the building is the artefact.
Architecture and Art cannot separated!

Art moves beyond cultural expression and becomes architectural syntax. Ornamentation becomes more than architectural decoration, more than Venturi’s Decorated Shed or Duck. JARtB House becomes the Alchemy of the
‘Decorated Duck’ expressed in an urban Neo Baroque paradigm

Double height spaces, interlocking volumes and visual links are connected and narrated through Art. Art informs architecture and program. Art becomes an architectural element. Art now has utility.

JARtB House becomes liveable art.

Project Innovation/Need

JARtB House resurrects the abandoned and forgotten ‘Master Craftsmen’.

The building retreats from the manufactured and standardised; and celebrates the handmade and the customised through skilled Artisans where the architect plays a principal and vital role.

Art and Architecture reunite and occupy a singular narrative a new typology that appeals to emotion and experience rather than the repetition of industry standards.

Customisation and experimentation was the driver for innovation and design resolution. Each craftsmen specialising in their distinctive individual bespoke construction; methodologies and technologies overlapping the other to execute
the building elements within the matrix of the building.

Design Challenge

As the Owner, Architect and Builder the process of construction and procurement required a multidisciplinary role. The work load for one individual to make decisions, provide instructions and stay on budget was a delicate and complex process.

Design decisions and problem resolution required to be resolved in real time during site inspections and remotely from the office as they were presented.
Quality control resided with one individual and ensuring that information and instructions was being distributed to contractors was a difficult task given the Architect could not always be on site.

The nature of customosiation also required design meetings on site and the office with overlapping contractors for specific details and programming which required lengthy periods of time to felicitate and coordinate during the hours of construction (7am-3:30pm) and office hours (9am-5:30pm); they were very long days!
