Project Overview

The VCE is a major stepping-stone for young people, bridging school life with their career aspirations. So it was particularly satisfying being involved in the Premier’s VCE Awards, a celebration of the highest academic achievements in Victorian schools.

Immediacy produced a series of videos for the Awards including an opener and some background stories on the guest presenters. The opener presented a challenged in covering the insights of 24 Top All-Round VCE High Achievers – all in a couple of minutes. The approach was to gather them all in to the studio set for group shots and then to interview them individually.

The shoot using the Canon C300 camera and the Sony 5D, we set up the studio within the offices of the Education Department and used a few smart devices and interview techniques to get the insightful responses about their approach to study and their career aspirations

We edited together some of the comment highlights and then for the material not used in the opener was used for a series of other videos to offer tips for students facing the pressure of the VCE years.

Project Brief

There was a series of videos made for the Awards event for different purposes within the event and then on the website of the Victorian Education Department. However, the video that we have submitted for consideration was used to open the event.

The video was designed to convey the journey these high-achieving students had been on over the course of their final years of study (called the VCE). The idea was that it recognised the hard work and commitment of the students.

The brief was to provide a sense of the journey of their education but we wanted to add another dimension. We showed the passion and personality of these teenagers by talking to them about their hobbies or career aspirations. The result was that the essence of their characters and excitement for different activities outside of school showing a life-study balance and the greater role that education provides.

The crew enjoyed interviewing these bright sparks. And if you watch the opener, you will learn that sometimes eating Nutella from the jar and watching Modern Family is the key to keeping it all balanced!

Project Need

This was the first time we had been involved in the Awards and we were conscious of the fact that videos had been involved in previous events. So we were committed to looking at what had been done in the past and to design video elements that were different and more engaging for the audience in two quite different forums - at the event and on the website.

We interviewed individually and in a group, relating to each other in a fun and informal manner. We designed the shoot set-up to enable the student to look directly at the lens that was hidden behind an iPad autocue and a few other trick-devices. This, along with seeing them laughing and talking with each other in the overlay, conveyed their bright personalities, their dedication to their studies for a good start to their careers.

Design Challenge

To re-iterate, the opener presented a challenged in covering the insights of 24 Top All-Round VCE High Achievers – all in a couple of minutes of screen time. The approach was to gather them all in to the studio set for group shots and then to interview them individually.

We shot using the Canon C300 camera and the Sony 5D and set up the studio within the offices of the Education Department. We used a few smart devices and interview techniques to get the insightful responses about their approach to study and their career aspirations.

The entire shoot for all of the videos (about 7 in total) needed to be covered in only two days - including a relatively complex set-up. However, with the combined resources of the crew and a supportive client, a substantial amount of video material was obtained.

The style and quality of the footage and engaging responses providing the opportunity for the post crew to edit together an authentic and entertaining story.

Sustainability

The best approach was to centralise the shoot to a city location at the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. It decreased the carbon footprint by having the individuals come to a city location, not having the large crew travel across the metropolitan area with camera vehicles and adding to the number of shoot days.

We also distributed digital files only (via the web), avoiding a massive DVD duplication run.

Overall, injecting the program with high production values and an authentic approach to ultra-short documentary style will ensure the program is relevant and has longevity which is an objective of sustainability.
