Project Brief
The Clean Energy Map needed to function as a dynamic, interactive public engagement tool highlighting innovation, new industry and employment opportunities and community-based projects.
Project Need
Reading Room created the Clean Energy Map (www.cleanenergymap.gov.au) to enable Australians to follow and share clean renewable energy projects across the country online. Featuring more than 1,300 energy efficient and pollution reducing projects from 16 separate Australian Government programs and initiatives, the Clean Energy Map is an interactive platform allowing users to enter their postcode or use GPS functionality to locate projects in their region. It is compatible with mobile devices including smartphones and tablets, allowing the user to access information ‘on the go’, and share content via Facebook and Twitter. Designed as a one-stop-shop for people wanting to know more about where money from a carbon price is being invested, the Clean Energy Map identifies how businesses, households and communities are helping shape Australia’s clean energy transformation. The map was developed by Reading Room to integrate into the existing Department of Industry, Innovation, Climate Change, Science, Research and Tertiary Education Drupal environment and leverage the geo-code and Google mapping functionality to support “projects near me” map lookups. The technical team used innovative performance optimisation techniques to ensure fast load times of the 1,300 project pins on the map on desktop and mobile devices.
User Experience
Australians are now able to follow and share clean and renewable energy projects across the country, thanks to a new online Clean Energy Map.
The Clean Energy Map features more than 1,300 energy efficient and pollution saving projects from 16 separate Australian Government programs and initiatives.
The interactive map allows users to enter their postcode or use GPS functionality to locate projects in their region.
These projects are grouped into categories – such as ‘industry’, ‘renewable energy’, or ‘community’ – with each category represented by a different coloured pin to assist identification.
The Map is compatible with mobile devices including iPhones, Android phones, iPads and tablets, and allows the user to access information ‘on the go’, or to share content via Facebook and Twitter.
The Clean Energy Map features outcomes from measures such as the Renewable Energy Target, but also specific initiatives including clean technology, energy efficiency, and on-the-land based programs.
Project Marketing
The Map launch on 17 May 2013 was supported by below-the-line promotion via Australian Government departments and agencies, Clean Energy Future stakeholders and partners, as well as local government and communities.
