Project Brief

After attending a party in 2012, Christie Sharpe the founder of ‘fancied’ realised that in social settings most people don’t have the courage to initiate a conversation with complete strangers.

So she set about developing the concept of an app that would enable people to broaden their social circle based on where they like to hang out and through their own social media network of friends and acquaintances.

One of the biggest challenges with meeting people from online and mobile dating services is the fear of not knowing if the person you’re connecting with will be genuine. ‘fancied’ eliminates this issue and gives the user confidence that the profiles on fancied are authentic, as singles have to register through Facebook.

‘fancied’ removes some of the obstacles to meeting new people as there is no rejection with fancied. Your interest in the other person is only revealed if they also ‘fancy’ you. There has to be a mutual interest from both parties for a match to be formed. Once a mutual interest is established a love-heart appears to reveal you have an opportunity to make contact and message each other.

‘fancied’ just doesn’t show you who you can meet, it also show you where the best places are to meet based on your location. ‘fancied’ is a fun social networking tool that lets the user meet their match at a recommended nightlife venue, or alternatively, motivates singles’ to meet new people based on the ‘hot-spots’ they can see on ‘fancied’.

Project Need

The fancied app is the first location-based social dating app to launch in Australia.

Unlike other social dating apps, fancied lets gives the user confidence that the profiles on fancied are authentic, as singles have to register through Facebook which means they are more likely to meet like minded people through their own social network of friends and acquaintances.

There are two ways a user can find their perfect match on fancied. Firstly, by playing the ‘fancy’ game and searching people Nearby, and secondly, by checking into a venue listed as a Hot Spot.

Feeling lucky? fancied has a fun shake-to-shuffle function where you can shake your phone to randomly discover other fancied users’ profiles Nearby.

Unlike any other dating apps, fancied is about finding mutual connections made easy in a social environment where the app just doesn’t show you who you can meet, but where the best places are to meet based on your location. Thanks to the ‘push to maps’ feature, using Apple maps, it is easy for users to get directions to a bar or nightlife venue to meet their match.

fancied is free to download and use, unlike other online and mobile dating services which charge a subscription to meet new people or a fee when there is a match. fancied also offers nightlife venues the opportunity to promote their restaurants and bars as a Hot Spot on fancied as well as offer fancied users exclusive special offers on drinks and meals.

User Experience

Singles can download the app for free from the App Store, then register via Facebook before they can meet new people on fancied. This ensures the profiles of users on fancied are genuine.

Once registered, a user can either get started by looking through profiles of other fancied users Nearby, or by checking into a venue listed as a Hot Spot. They can also invite other people to fancied, increasing the number of users via their social network.

fancied also has a fun shake-to-shuffle function where you can shake your phone to randomly discover other fancied users’ profiles Nearby.

fancied lets users refine their search criteria and once they find someone they like, they can ‘fancy’ them. Mutual interest must be established before a match is formed so there is no fear of rejection. Once a match is formed, a love-heart appears to reveal an opportunity to make contact and message each other.

Users can also increase their chances of meeting new people via fancied by seeing the number of people who have checked-in to a ‘hot-spot’ in any city across Australia. Hot spots are usually nightlife venues such as restaurants, bars and pubs. To ensure a users privacy and security, fancied also has an automatic checkout set at 500m from a Hot Spot.

Hot Spots registered with fancied can encourage and reward customers for choosing their venue as a place to meet new singles or take their fancied matches on a date through exclusive offers on drinks and meals.

Project Marketing

Getfancied is promoting ‘fancied’ on its website as well as through its social media channels on Facebook and Twitter.

Editorial coverage was also secured across other Pacific Magazine titles such as NW, Who, New Idea and Women’s Health.

The other key launch partner, Keystone Group will also be promoting fancied through its nightlife venues such as Cargo Bar, Bungalow 8, Gazebo, Kit & Kaboodle, The Rook and The Winery as well as through its extensive subscriber base via special offers and monthly newsletters.

The launch of ‘fancied’ will also celebrated, with a launch at Hugo’s on 6 September.
