Project Overview

Arcadis, WSP | Parson Brinckerhoff and Grimshaw are leading the design to develop London Bridge Station, the cornerstone of the Thameslink improvement project.

Project Commissioner

Thameslink

Project Creator

Grimshaw Architects

Project Brief

Whilst providing additional capacity for around two thirds more passengers to the station, the scheme will ensure that the station forms a seamless and sympathetic connection into the neighbouring environment. The team encompasses significant experience of major projects in the London Bridge Quarter, and will work together to achieve a new station typology.

Project Innovation/Need

Crucially, the re-negotiation of space will unlock 80% of Thameslink’s capacity by developing connections between the north and south. The five year re-development will require extensive coordination to ensure that the final design unifies the site. A new concourse, greater in scale than the pitch at Wembley, will be built at street level, beneath the tracks, and will become an integral feature of the site. There will also be an increase in the number of tracks going through the station, from six to nine, and a reduction from nine to six in the number of terminating platforms.

This award celebrates the design process and product of planning, designing and constructing form, space and ambience that reflect functional, technical, social, and aesthetic considerations. Consideration given for material selection, technology, light and shadow.
