This is a shopping mall at Xiamen with 4 storeys above ground and 1 level underground carpark.
Site area is 19,896 sqm, GFA is 103,910 sqm including 73,400 sqm above ground and 30,510 sqm below ground.
Shimao Xiamen shopping centre is a community mall for Xiaman Jimei District residents, office workers and surrounding university students.

Project Brief
To design a community mall for Xiaman Jimei District residents, office workers and surrounding university students. To provide an exquisite, fashionable, and energetic "Cosy Lifestyle Centre" for local people, aimed to become a brand-new venue for friends gathering, socializing, casual walk with kids and chilling out in Jimei New City.
With the spiritual concept “Boundless Garden School”, this mall will become a living and learning space that grows with everyone.
"Boundless" means no division, regardless of age.
"School" is to learn together, live together, and keep pace with the times
A school is like a "garden", a space that nurtures wisdom.
Different individuals connect to different groups, different age groups have their own roles.
In this “Boundless Garden School”, everyone can learn, discuss and share ideas with each other.
Project Innovation/Need
With the spiritual concept “Boundless Garden School”, this mall will become a living and learning space that grows with everyone.
We designed a “huge open book” idea for the 30 meters wide main entrance , implying that once you enter this mall, a brand-new good day will be started and refreshing you all the time.
Main shopping arcade “Thinking on the Way” is inviting, stylish and with a strong sense of flow. The streamlined Barrisol lightboxes with nickel sliver ceiling triming guiding visitors to explore the mall.
“Garden of Wisdom” is the event atrium where performance, workshop and sharing can be held. “Tree of Learning” grows from feature bridge to large skylight which made this space more memorable and Instagramable. In this atrium, there are some “Stacking Books” terraces, these could be small stage for performance or seating area.
“Dynamic Node” let visitors to experience new excitement. LED screen ceiling, triangular shaped mirror stainless steel void edge, make you feels like standing inside a 9 meters height kaleidoscope.
At the L4 Roof Garden, with a grand staircase connected to L5 Sky Garden, this becomes an excellent venue for the local community. Xiamen youths can spend their weekend under sunshine, they can read books, chat with friends or having a small performance here. Parents could spend their time with kids at indoor anchor playground or at L5 Sky Garden playground.
Design Challenge
1. Client reduced the fitting-out construction budget after 50% of schematic design, thus we had to revise our design to fit the budget and kept checking our proposed design fit in the budget.
2. Due to Covid -19 , we are not able meeting and presentation to client face to face, we are not able to do on site review during construction stage . Communication is much less effective as we could not meet client face to face . Luckily we have mainland colleague helped us to do on site construction review.
Sustainability
Shimao Xiamen shopping centre fulfilled the China Green Building ‘One star’ standard.
A 75-meter width with 35-meter length “Roof Garden” at L4 allow people to enjoy their own time.
Visitors could take rest and watch small performance, with the 202 sqm grade staircase landscape which leading you to the 1,531 sqm Sky Garden with kids’ playground at L5.
306 sqm skylight at the key event atrium “Garden of Wisdom”, and 875 sqm skylight along main shopping arcade allow sufficient natural daylight to permeate the interior.
The project’s basic construction materials and flooring materials are by the local manufactures within 50km from the site location.
Interior Design - International Retail - Shopping & Food
This award celebrates innovative and creative building interiors, with consideration given to space creation and planning, furnishings, finishes and aesthetic presentation. Consideration given to space allocation, traffic flow, building services, lighting, fixtures, flooring, colours, furnishings and surface finishes.
