Project Overview

With the accelerating pace of life, we are gradually neglecting the observation of nature. But in fact, most of the concept of time in human society originates from the astronomical phenomena, such as the rising and setting of the sun, the waxing and waning of the moon, the movement of stars and so on. Our inspiration comes from nature. We show the phases of the moon on the watch, which reflects the relationship between the moon and the watch, so the users can intuitively feel the continuous changes of the moon.

AGELOCER is a mechanical watch brand, which is mainly engaged in movement research and development and watchmaking; AGEL takes the brand concept of "exquisite craftsmanship, unlimited creativity", insists on independent research and development of movements, and has its own craftsmanship. The system, ingeniously fusion of traditional craftsmanship and technological innovation in the new era, has obtained a number of watch design patents. The Big Bang series, astronomer series, tourbillon and other series of watches under the brand are very popular among watch lovers.

Project Brief

This is a mechanical watch showing the phases of the moon. Ordinary moon-phase watches do not enlarge the relationship between the moon phases and the watch, which is a relatively small semicircle. And this watch from Agelocer has a panoramic effect featuring the phases of the moon, which enlarges the view of the moon's phases to the entire dial plate. We adopted 3D printing technology to simulate and restore the surface of the moon, and the silver moon-phase dial is more eye-catching. We have redesigned the drive mechanism to allow the watch to drive the larger moon-phase dial. Users can observe the waxing and waning of the moon, having special experiences besides digital display. In the meantime, to prevent the moon-phase dial from sliding on its own when worn, we reset the anti-reverse mechanism to make it work better.

Project Innovation/Need

The moon-phase watch brings new trends to the watch market and has made bold innovation on the original design concept, pointing out a new way to sustainable designs for products on the market. In addition, the buckle has also been improved. Everyone's wrist is different, and regular strap with fixed hole spacing are not suitable for different customers. Inspired by the folding and pulling of ties, we designed this infinitely adjustable clasp as an alternative to traditional mechanical watch, regardless of the thickness of the wrist.

Design Challenge

The most difficult part of the design lies in two parts:
1 The size control of crescent window. If the window is too large, the display error will be increased. If the window is too small, the moon phase effect will be poorly displayed. In order to stay within reasonable tolerances, we repeatedly test to make the moon-phase window as large as possible, and enlarge the rotating moon-phase dial to the size of 28mm in diameter.
2 The change in the moment of inertia due to the larger moon-phase dial. We redesigned the drive mechanism to enable the watch to drive the moon-phase dial, and we also redesigned the anti-reverse mechanism to prevent the moon-phase dial from rotating on its own when worn within a space of 0.2mm-0.4mm thickness.

Sustainability

The on/off lugs strap allows users to disassemble and replace it without any tools, which is convenient and easy. The design of mechanical watches eliminates the need to use and replace batteries, reducing the carbon footprint on the earth. With proper maintenance, the watch lasts longer than regular quartz and smart watches, reducing the user's purchase cost and waste of resources.




This award celebrates creative and innovative design for either a component or overall product. Consideration given to aspects that relate to human usage, aesthetics, selection of components and materials, and the resolution of assembly, manufacturing and the overall function.
