Project Overview

In face of an ever-changing life pace today, a young couple with a limited budget chooses to renovate an old apartment to meet the needs of starting a family and raising children. A residence that can both accommodate a nuclear family and be adaptable to a modern life is thus an economical and practical project. A Residence with a Green Tree is located in a remodeled old house in Tainan. Originally a traditional apartment with 3 bedrooms, a living room and a dining room, it covers 132 square meters and is now laid out to include two bedrooms, a living room, a dining room and an open-concept study. In so doing, the family of a couple and their children can enjoy a living environment that is wider and of better quality.

Project Brief

The design centers on the image of a tree, which is the homeowners’ favorite. The public section has a wall featuring a tree structure, using ready-made panels to custom-make special angles and effects. The idea of being close to nature and loving the environment is thus embodies in the shape and form of the tree. This design actually places emphasis on reducing renovation, retaining adaptability of the space, being eco-friendly, and green energy as well as reuse.

Project Need

Accordingly, the traditional practice of massive carpentry in renovation is relinquished. Instead, such green building materials as low-formaldehyde ready-made panels and eco-friendly paints are used, paired with system cabinets and snap-together flooring to devise thoughtful details like an adjustable dining table and storage under the bedroom beds. The furniture, fixtures, and even the tables, cabinets, floor and artificial-stone counter top are installed in such a way that they can all be removed and reused when the family moves to a new place. In this way, remodelling waste can be reduced, and the burden on the environment can be lightened.

Sustainability

The layout is an L-shaped one with natural light from two sides. To make the best of ample sunlight during the day, an open-concept layout is adopted for renovation, so that light can stream profusely indoors. With an open-plan space, children can grow up in a larger place for playing and lounging. The overall design revolves around lustrousness and mellowness created by a combination of classic white and wood-tone. By means of light renovation, some unadorned space and least installed hardware, a spatial design of “less is more” is realized. By doing so, children can move around in a home that is danger-proof, finding a sense of security and warmth coming from being loved and cared for.
