Project Overview

Our Continuous Quality Lab (CQ Lab) is a cloud-based mobile app and responsive website testing platform. The Continuous Quality Lab allows businesses to build, test, optimise and monitor mobile app usability and performance far more easily and thoroughly than ever before. Ultimately, the CQ Lab allows businesses to build better apps and websites, providing their customers and users with a better digital experience. In a world in which customers are focused on using most of their products and services online, this is critical for businesses.

Organisation

Perfecto

Team

Perfecto mobilises brands by helping perfect the digital experiences that define them. Perfecto's complete, cloud-based lab helps enterprise teams deliver Continuous Quality for native apps and web using real devices in real end-user environments. We provide the deep, real-time insight businesses need by strengthening every digital interaction and nurturing loyal, empowered users.

The world's leading brands trust Perfecto to test, monitor and deliver better apps, faster. But before Perfecto was the leader in digital experience quality, we were a team of innovative, relentless techies, dedicated to helping customers deliver great apps. As customer engagement moved to the web, and then to mobile devices, the need for a complete solution drove our innovation.

Project Brief

The CQ Lab allows users to ease the pain and limitations of mobile manual testing to ensure a flawless customer experience for web and mobile apps. This is critical for both retaining customers and gaining new ones. In fact, research has shown that 67% of consumers cite bad customer experience as a reason for switching providers (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/vala-afshar/50-important-customer-exp_b_8295772.html).

The CQ Lab allows users, primarily software developers and engineers, to test the functionality and interoperability of the mobile and web apps that they are building or improving under complex, real-world scenarios. For example, users can test applications on a wide variety of real devices, including different smartphones and tablets, rather than using emulators as many other testing systems do. The CQ Lab also allows developers to test their apps in a range of network conditions including different geographical locations, different signal conditions and different networks. This allows developers to experience the apps they build exactly as customers do.

The CQ Lab operates in the cloud, meaning that developers can run functional tests anytime, from anywhere. Developers can continually test as they are building, rather than only being able to test the app once building is complete, which speeds up time-to-market for new applications or new releases of existing applications. The CQ Lab also offers bespoke hybrid cloud storage which allows different data to be stored in private, public or local cloud systems depending on the business needs.

Project Need

Speed, Accuracy, and End User Experience. The speed and accuracy enabled by the CQ Lab gives businesses the tools to provide better end user experiences than other testing products have ever allowed.
The Continuous Quality Lab optimises time-to-market, drives faster and more releases, and improves accuracy by catching defects before they get to production.

The CQ Lab allows users to ensure a great customer experience by continually testing mobile and web apps on a wide variety of real devices used by real end-users, including different smartphones and tablets across different operating systems such as Android and iOS. Devices are located in Perfecto’s worldwide data centres, and when testers use the CQ Lab, the actual device is being used rather than an emulator.

The CQ Lab also ensures that users can give their customers a great experience by enabling testing across a vast range of different scenarios, including different geographical locations, signal conditions and networks. For example, a user might want to test how a customer will experience an app if they are using an iPhone 6 with an iOS 9 operating system, in London, on the underground, and using the Three network. With this level of specificity, the CQ Lab provides users with the confidence to ensure that all consumers have an uninterrupted experience.

User Experience

Users of the CQ Lab have reported that it has allowed them to build an excellent user experience for their customers that allows them to remain competitive in an increasingly mobile, digital marketplace.
For example, user experience on mobile has become critical to Perfecto client Virgin Media’s survival as more and more people access Virgin Media’s site and buy Virgin Media products from their mobiles.

In order to provide a flawless mobile experience for their customers, Virgin Media started using the Continuous Quality Lab to test their mobile apps. They reported that this allowed them to simplify their testing process, allowing all of the previously time-consuming and difficult tasks to become automated, centralise the governance of their testing procedures and test the app across all of the different devices actually used by their customers. This revolutionised their app testing procedures, and consequently their app quality and customer experience.

“Working with Perfecto has allowed us to expand and improve multiple layers of the Virgin Media app quality strategy. We have been able to extend our responsive test automation platform to real devices rather than emulators, which now lets us test our apps for a real customer experience," said Robert Randall, Test Technology Innovation Manager at Virgin Media.

Project Marketing

The Continuous Quality Lab is Perfecto’s core product, and so is a key part of Perfecto’s overall marketing strategy. The marketing strategy for the Continuous Quality Lab is focused around two key messages: communicating Perfecto’s role in building high quality mobile and web apps; and promoting the importance of high quality digital app experience in both gaining and retaining customers, which plays a key role in business profitability and ultimately survival.

These messages are communicated through Perfecto’s owned content, such as Perfecto’s blog posts, social media content, owned videos and other website content. This is further amplified and communicated through earned coverage gained through press releases and online PR outreach focused on thought leadership. In addition, the dual messages of Perfecto’s role in the digital experience and the importance of the digital experience itself are highlighted through trade show attendance and messaging as well as digital marketing such as paid search.

Perfecto’s marketing message of the importance of the Continuous Quality Lab as a way to ensure a top customer experience resonates strongly with customers, and Perfecto has seen great success based on this marketing approach. For example, Virgin Media has demonstrated that the digital experience has become a key part of their business, and that the CQ Lab has allowed them to give their customers the digital experience that they need to remain competitive.

Project Privacy

Perfecto has implemented best practice privacy and security into the Continuous Quality Lab by offering secure access, compliance and network availability – everything that developers need to develop highly secure web and mobile apps. All data is highly secure at both a cloud and data centre level.

All clouds can be accessed via high bandwidth networks that connect to all major carriers and are located near major Internet hubs, and data is transmitted across encrypted links. The CQ lab offers bespoke hybrid cloud storage, as different parts of the testing system can be stored in private, public or local cloud systems depending on security requirements, among other business needs.

Perfecto’s 13 global data centres are designed around reliable disaster recovery, and include certifications for SOC2 and PCI, 508 Compliance, and Safe Harbour. Perfecto is also certified with the Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) and is TRUSTe Verified. At data centre sites, Perfecto relies on the latest and most reliable security access controls including biometric readers, mantraps and CCTV monitoring. Every data centre also includes 24-hour managed security that includes foot patrols and perimeter inspections. In addition to compliance and access security controls, all devices are locked inside access-controlled steel cases. The Continuous Quality Lab aligns with industry best practices including NIST and ISO 27002 control frameworks.

The current pick of the crop apps have moved from roll your own to accelerating by using platforms, tools and frameworks,  just like yours. The winner of this category will be a dev platform or service that makes the App life cycle go easier than other alternatives, it will power features that would have taken years to bring to market and allow App Designers to run and jump where if they had to do it themselves they would just be imagining their solution
